Its name may not immediately conjure images of your own private haven, but that's exactly what Room & Board founder and president John Gabbert hopes his home furnishings chain will help you create. Founded in 1980, Room & Board operates a dozen stores in California, Illinois, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, New York, and the District of Columbia. The company's furniture collections feature contemporary sofas, chairs, and tables, as well as office, bedroom, and outdoor furniture. Room & Board's Shop From Home operation, which consists of a print catalog and website, is the fastest-growing segment of its business. And despite a slump in furniture sales in the US, the company has been expanding.
Room & Board expanded into the Southeastern US in 2009 after a successful catalog campaign in Atlanta. The company had mailed out about 20,000 catalogs and its sales spurred the furniture company to open a store there. The company typically shies away from mall locations and is looking to open additional new stores in Dallas, Boston, Seattle, and Miami. In 2009, it expanded into Washington, DC. – less
