Taking out the trash is a family affair for Rumpke Consolidated Companies. The firm provides waste collection, disposal, and recycling services for residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. The company operates nine landfills, 20 transfer stations, and eight recycling facilities with a fleet of 1,600 vehicles. The company's facilities process more than 500 million pounds of recyclables each year. In addition, Rumpke rents portable toilets and repairs and distributes hydraulic components. The Rumpke family owns the company, which was founded in 1932 by William F. Rumpke as a coal and junkyard business. Some 50 Rumpke family members are employed by their namesake company.
Rumpke Consolidated lives up to its name -- acquiring and consolidating smaller waste collection outfits (more than 200) into an integrated multi-state service operation. In 2008 Rumpke acquired H&R Sanitation in Ashland, Kentucky, comprising trucks, containers, and about 2,000 residential and commercial accounts. It expanded further in 2009 by acquiring waste collection assets in the Mansfield and Cleveland area of Ohio from Republic Services, with 39,000 residential and 3,000 commercial customers.
The company has continued to expand in recent years. It was selected in 2010 as the official waste removal and recycling hauler for the City of East Cleveland. In 2011 Rumpke purchased the Northern Ohio waste collection and hauling business of Landmark Disposal, adding to assets it already holds in Cleveland, Akron and Canton. – less
