Salina Health Education Foundation, Inc. (SHEF) was founded in 1979 by Dr. Robert Brown as a community based, non-profit family medicine residency program. The mission of the organization was to train family physicians for rural Kansas. Salina Cares was founded in 1991 as a free clinic to serve the low income uninsured of Salina. The residency program began providing resident physicians to staff Salina Cares in 1998. In early 2004, Salina Cares merged with SHEF and a new clinic name, Salina Family Healthcare Center (SFHC), was selected to reflect the long history of service to the community. SFHC became a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) on December 1, 2004. Late in 2005, SFHC opened our dental office. In February 2009, SHEF began efforts to transform our practice into a patient-centered healthcare home. Through this work, SFHC has redefined its mission as being “to provide excellent healthcare in a patient-centered setting that fosters education, all in a positive work environment.” Guiding us as we fulfill that mission are our desires to lead the way in training family physicians for rural Kansas; to provide access to quality healthcare regardless of one’s ability to pay; to be the employer of choice in the community; to demonstrate good stewardship of entrusted resources; and to be a center for innovation and learning. In January 2013, Salina Family Healthcare Center was recognized as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home™, the highest level of recognition by the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA).
The clinic has five full-time and one part-time family physicians who serve as faculty to our thirteen family medicine residents and provide oversight of four mid-level providers and one non-faculty physician.
