If you'll meet me in St. Louis, chances are there'll be a Schnucks in sight. The region's largest food chain, Schnuck Markets operates about 100 stores, two-thirds of which are in the St. Louis area. The other stores are in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Wisconsin. All stores offer a full line of groceries and 95% have pharmacies. Other services include Redbox video rentals, in-store banking, and florist shops. Although most stores operate under the Schnucks banner, the company also runs about half a dozen Logli supermarkets in Illinois and Wisconsin, and a specialty pharmacy. Founded in 1939, the company is owned by the Schnuck family and run by CEO Scott Schnuck and president and COO Todd Schnuck.
Schnuck Markets rang up an estimated $2.6 billion in sales in fiscal 2011 (ends September), vs. $2.5 billion the prior year.
Schnuck leveraged its experience operating in-store drugstores with the opening in May 2012 of its first full-service standalone pharmacy on the site of St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois.
Schnuck has shuffled its holdings of late, exiting Mississippi and Tennessee, while building its presence in Illinois. In 2010 it closed a store in Tennessee, citing competition from rival supercenters and other supermarket operators in the immediate area. A year later, the chain sold its holdings in Memphis -- nine supermarkets and eight convenience stores -- to Kroger in September 2011. Soon after that, Schnuck acquired seven Hilander stores and a fuel center in Rockford, Illinois from Kroger.
While Schnuck Markets does most of its business in the suburbs, the grocery chain in August 2009 opened a new urban prototype store -- named Culinaria -- in the heart of downtown St. Louis. Measuring a modest 23,000 sq.-ft., the store is about a third of the size of a traditional Schnuck supermarket. Culinaria is a full-service grocery store with specialty food items and a coffee bar and wine shop. The company is also tinkering with its traditional store format in suburban Des Peres, Missouri, where it has opened a new replacement store that includes a cooking school, an expanded selection of prepared foods for in-store dining or take out, and other innovations. – less
