Scripps Health houses many a script-writing physician in its hospitals. The not-for-profit health system serves the San Diego area through four acute-care hospitals on five campuses. Altogether the health system is home to 1,400 inpatient beds and a network of outpatient clinics. The system also offers home health care and operates community outreach programs. Its hospitals, along with more than 20 outpatient Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal Medical Center locations, employ more than 2,600 affiliated general practice and specialty physicians. The Scripps Health Foundation raises philanthropic funds for Scripps Health is affiliated with biomedical research center The Scripps Research Institute.
The health network's facilities include the 700-bed Scripps Mercy Hospital, which has a main campus in San Diego and a satellite campus in Chula Vista, as well as Scripps Green Hospital (173 beds in La Jolla), Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas (160 beds), and Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla (310 beds). Scripps Health is also the official health care provider for the San Diego Padres baseball team.
Each year, the not-for-profit Scripps Health organization brings in more than $2 billion in annual revenues. Its reported earnings were more than $2.4 billion in 2011, primarily sourced to patient service revenues. The company also brings in some funds from government grants, commercial research partnerships, and charitable donations. Scripps Health provides some $320 million in unreimbursed and charity care services each year, as well.
As a major provider in the larger San Diego area, Scripps Health is constantly evaluating its scope of services to meet ever-increasing demand for health care. The company is building several outpatient clinics including cancer treatment and cardiac care centers. It is also expanding and upgrading its hospitals; for instance, the La Jolla hospital is adding a $456 million, 170-bed cardiovascular institute (scheduled to open in 2015), and the Encinitas center is undergoing a $94 million expansion project (scheduled for completion in 2014) that includes the addition of a new ER and critical care wing.
The health system's overall strategy is to remain on the cutting edge of technology in order to treat patients more effectively, therefore reporting better patient outcomes (making itself eligible for certain government incentives). It also aims to make itself the destination of choice for patients (both locally and globally) for heart, cancer care, and other types of specialty care.
In addition, Scripps Health has launched an initiative to increase the number of clinical trials conducted at its facilities in partnership with pharmaceutical and medical device companies. While Scripps Health continues to grow, the company keeps an eye on its bottom line, continuing to evaluate its budget on a regular basis to reduce expenses when necessary. – less
