Security Service Federal Credit Union (SSFCU) works to keep its members' cash secure. Through more than 30 branches in the San Antonio area and South Texas, plus about 30 more in Colorado and Utah, SSFCU provides such financial services as checking and savings accounts, CDs, credit cards, insurance and investment products, residential mortgages, and business and consumer loans. The not-for-profit, member-owned credit union was founded in 1956 to serve the US Air Force Security Service Command and today has more than 750,000 members. One of the largest credit unions in the US, SSFCU also has its own political action committee to participate in legislative activities related to the credit union industry.
SSFCU caters to civil service and military personnel and their families. It also serves members and employees of certain Methodist and Catholic churches; employees and alumni of selected universities; employees of the US federal government, Colorado and Texas states, and area public school districts; as well as employees and members of more than 600 businesses and organizations in central and southern Texas and southern Colorado.
The credit union has been growing by acquisitions, including scooping up smaller institutions that have been weakened by the credit crisis. From 2007 to 2009 SSFCU acquired five credit unions in Texas and Colorado. It entered Utah with the purchase of the failed Beehive Credit Union in 2010 and expanded in the state with the 2011 acquisition of Family First Credit Union. – less
