About Sharon Regional Health System
Sharon Regional Health System is now part of a growing number of health care organizations nationwide that are focusing on the number one health problem in women: cardiovascular disease. Sharon Regional has launched the Women's HeartAdvantage program, part of a national initiative to change women's behavior about heart disease. VHA Inc., a national – more... alliance of 2,200 health care organizations and their physicians, is collaborating with Sharon Regional to implement the program.
"When we were approached to consider becoming part of the Women's HeartAdvantage program, it seemed a logical fit for Sharon Regional," said Wayne Johnston, president and CEO. "With the continued growth in our Heart Institute and our active on-site efforts to treat heart attacks and heart disease, right here close to home, we felt like we had all the components in place to successfully implement this program."
The Women's Heart Advantage program is designed to raise awareness and change behavior among women with steps that they can take to prevent heart attacks and how to recognize when a heart attack is occurring, since women's symptoms may differ from men's. The program also provides physicians and their offices with information about the prevention, detection, and treatment of heart disease in women.
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death among women in the United States, striking more women than the next seven causes of death combined - and almost twice as many as all forms of cancer. Yet, most women believe breast cancer is their greatest health risk and are not even aware of the risk factors or symptoms of heart disease.
The Mercer County division of the American Heart Association (AHA) is partnering with Sharon Regional on the Women's HeartAdvantage program. "Our Mercer County division has enjoyed working with Sharon Regional on numerous heart-related projects in the past, and is proud to partner with them in this new initiative - and do our part to help with this important educational and awareness effort," stated Diane O'Brien, corporate event coordinator for the AHA's Mercer County division.
James Ryan, M.D., Sharon Regional cardiologist and medical co-advisor to the Women's HeartAdvantage program, says that while some symptoms of heart disease are similar for men and women, there are important differences as well. "We tend to think of heart disease as a man's disease, and focus on those classic male symptoms," says Dr. Ryan. "But women can have other symptoms as well, and we in the medical community must learn to pay more attention to those."
In developing the Women's HeartAdvantage program, Sharon Regional conducted benchmarking research on the attitudes and awareness that women in the Shenango Valley have about women and heart disease. Many of the women surveyed have risk factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and others, yet don't recognize these risks can directly lead to heart attacks.
"Our challenge is to get women to act," said Maryann Payne, M.D., cardiothoracic surgeon at Sharon Regional and also a co-advisor of the program. "The problem is that women are delaying seeing their physicians or going to an emergency room when experiencing symptoms of a heart attack. Through the Women's HeartAdvantage program, we're giving women tools to help them be more assertive in seeking rapid and appropriate care." – less – More from ZoomInfo »
