Shelter Network

Shelter Network was founded in 1987 to provide a comprehensive coordinated network of housing and social services for the homeless residents of the San Francisco Peninsula. Initiated by a broad-based community response to the plight of homeless families and single adults, Shelter Network is a model of community involvement. Since the beginning, the – more... community’s residents, religious congregations, businesses, and local government organizations have contributed considerable talent, hours, and dollars to Shelter Network.

Shelter Network opened with an annual budget of $150,000, two paid staff, a core of dedicated volunteers and community supporters, and a vision of starting the first housing program to help homeless families in San Mateo County. Now with an annual budget of more than $7 million, eleven programs, more than 50 full-time staff, and hundreds of volunteers, Shelter Network is the Peninsula's principal provider of housing and support for homeless families and individuals. In fiscal year 2006-2007, we provided over 183,000 nights of shelter and served over 3,500 homeless adults and children. Over 97% of families and single adults who complete Shelter Network programs succeed in returning to permanent housing.

Forty percent of Shelter Network's budget comes from private organizations and individuals while sixty percent is from government grants. Over 80% of Shelter Network's income goes toward direct program costs.
