Gryphon Investors is on the hunt for hidden treasures among middle market companies. The private equity firm pursues investments in companies in the business services, consumer goods, general industry, and retail sectors with annual sales of $25 million to $250 million. Seeking to take a controlling interest in its target firms, it typically invests between $25 million and $75 million per transaction and holds on to its investments for three to five years. Its current portfolio includes stakes in business software firm Intelligrated, clothing retailer Shepler's, and Delta Education. Founded in 1995, Gryphon Investors has completed more than 50 acquisitions and has some $900 million in capital under management.
The company actively tweaks its lineup of portfolio companies -- entering new ventures and selling off older ones. Acquisitions in 2010 included Ann's House of Nuts and Amport, a private label purveyor of dried fruits. In 2011, the firm acquired Trinity Consultants, which provides air quality compliance and related environmental services in the US and abroad. That year Gryphon also acquired a majority stake in K&N Engineering, a provider of air and oil filtration products for the auto industry.
The firm also pursues add-on acquisitions, such as then-portfolio holding Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers' 2011 purchase of two physical therapy companies. (Shortly thereafter, Gryphon sold Accelerated to OMERS Private Equity. The company doubled in size under Gryphon's ownership.) – less
