My experience with Shoe Carnival was not a positive one. I was hired as a part of a team of 25 to open a new store, with a tad over minimum wage as the compensation. To this day I still am not sure who was in charge at that store because there were three people who seemed to juggle being the leader. There was pretty much no training for any of the associates – more... I worked with. We spent two weeks doing hard labor, unloading semi-trailers of about 1,000 boxes each truck, about 40 to 60 lbs. a box. The pay was not worth the work we did, considering these were 10 to 12 hour shifts. After the store was set up, it was apparent the managers had picked favorites, and the rest of the group was given the dirty work. After the grand opening about five of us were let go unceremoniously. We were not given a letter, or a call, or any notification that we were no longer employed, we were simply never scheduled again. I had to call several (7 or 8) times to find out I was let go. It was not a very good experience in closing. – less

Women's Lead (Former Employee), CHATTANOOGA , TN – April 15, 2013
Pros: ability to be silly at work.
Cons: poor health benefits.
This is a great place to work. You are expected to perform excellent customer service and that might not effect the amount of hours you work. Be careful the company focuses on the bottom line. They will cut employees pay as quickly as needed with no notice to employees. The company officers some employee benefits but the benefits are not that great. – more... I loved being able to interact with the customers and goof around at work- after all it is shoe CARNIVAL. A typical day includes setting up the store in the morning, working with the merchandise, customer service, and helping out with additional work. The night crew is responsible for cleaning and resetting the store after hours. – less

The most enjoyable part of the job is the customers. Shoe Carnival provides a different shopping experience that provides a detailed visit to find shoes. We involve our customers in every process from when they walk into the door to the second they step out of the door.

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Evansville, IN – March 14, 2013
Pros: get to meet some pretty cool people!
Cons: time goes by very slow!
Throughout your shift, you were assigned a specific number of isles. Depending on the day, you would have different tasks. On Wednesdays, we would get a new shipment of shoes in so we would have to make room for every new pair which meant you had to rearrange pretty much every isle. When you aren't doing that, you need to be servicing customers, and – more... making sure that all of the shoes are where they belong. – less
Kids Shoes Department Lead (Former Employee), Lower Alabama – March 8, 2013

Cash Lead (Former Employee), Greenwood, SC – March 2, 2013
Pros: relaxed, fun environment
Cons: breaks were not always guaranteed
A typical day involved assisting customers with purchases. I learned better communication and time management skills. The management seemed favorable towards other members of upper management but they were friendly people. The hardest part of my job was balancing several customers at the same time. My favorite part of the job was the variety of people – more... that came in the store. – less
