About Sikorsky

Russian-born helicopter pioneer Igor Sikorsky is long dead, but helicopters bearing his name still soar the skies. A subsidiary of United Technologies, Sikorsky Aircraft designs, manufactures, and services such military helicopters as the Black Hawk (combat support, border security, medevac); Seahawk (anti-submarine/surface warfare, search/rescue); – more... and Superhawk (military operations). Sikorsky's CH-53K helicopter is used by the US Marines for heavy lift operations. Civil aircraft include the S-76 and S-92, which are used for rescue, offshore oil, medical, and corporate use. Sikorsky also offers fixed-wing aircraft, aftermarket spare parts, and MRO services for helicopters used by US and foreign governments.

Operations

Sikorsky's divides its operations across three chief segments. Sikorsky Military Systems targets the needs of the US and international military segments. Sikorsky Global Helicopters (SGH), the commercial business unit, serves customers in contract execution, as well as final manufacture and delivery of their helicopters, through its delivery center in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The third division, Sikorsky Aerospace Services, supports more than 10,000 rotary and fixed wing aircraft in 75 countries through aftermarket logistics, maintenance, training, and materiel support. This division includes a blade repair and overhaul facility at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Geographic Reach

Sikorsky's operations span five continents, with its commercial and military helicopters operating in 40 countries. It owns manufacturing facilities located in the US and Poland and joint ventures in China and Turkey. Additional supplier manufacturing facilities reside in Czech Republic (AERO Vodochody), China (Changhe Aircraft), and India (Tata Advanced Systems Limited).

Financial Analysis

Aftermarket products and services are proving to be a lucrative area of business for Sikorsky. Sales of aftermarket products in 2011 increased 4% over 2010. The company realized a 10% increase in overall revenues for 2011 compared to 2010, fueled primarily by higher military sales, including a lift in international revenue. Sikorsky generated about 13% of its parent company's total revenues in 2011.

Strategy

To capture new clients and increase the amount of orders for its helicopters, Sikorsky is looking to expand internationally. In 2012 it launched a new office in Malaysia, a region it believes is ripe for strong growth in the aerospace markets. It plans to use the office as a springboard for serving additional Southeast Asia customers.

To the south of the Canadian border, Sikorsky bought a minority stake in Eclipse Aerospace, a US-based light-jet maker, in early 2011. Sikorsky and Eclipse also signed service agreements that should result in more sales for Sikorsky's aftermarket parts business.

Company Background

The Sikorsky Manufacturing Corporation was established in 1925 on Long Island, New York. It relocated to Connecticut in 1929. – less
