Systems Analyst (Current Employee) –  San Francisco, CAAugust 13, 2015
Working long hours and putting in hard work won't get very far. This company is like a revolving door where young architects come in and work for a short period of time before leaving to work somewhere else.

Assistant Project Manager / Project Administrator (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILOctober 29, 2014
SOM has built some of the most iconic buildings in the world, from the Willis Tower in Chicago to the Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world.

As a project administrator and assistant project manager, I was given a myriad of tasks during my seven years in the office, all related to the administrative handling of a project. I worked for project managers tasked with projects in Dubai, China, Qatar, Hong Kong, the Philippines, the United States and Latin America. My duties ranged from drafting proposals and contracts to the creation of templates, handling of minutes, tracking of expenses and any other project-related tasks that may come up.
Pros
excellent work/life balance, attractive benefits and prime location
Cons
little room for advancement or professional development

Technical Architect (Former Employee) –  New York, NYOctober 3, 2014
Typical day consisted of developing Technical Details on various Construction Packages.I developed my skills on AutoCAD. I managed various Architectural Packages as part of a LARGE Design Team. Most people were so focussed on their work that they did not get acquainted with fellow workers. The hardest part of the job were the long hours. The most enjoyable part of the job was working on some very exciting Projects.
Pros
working in an international recognizable office
Cons
short breaks and long hours.

Manager (Former Employee) –  New York, NYDecember 18, 2013
Opportunities to work on terrific projects with very talented people.
Unfortunately they promote homogeny in their people and appearance.
The ability to play office politics is more appreciated than actual ability to do work.
Pros
world-class clients, talented junior staff
Cons
resting on their laurels too much, office politics more important than skills, poor work-life balance

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILApril 27, 2012
A typical work day would be working with the Associate Partner (the head of the department) and the whole structural department. This would be entail taking care of answering the phone for the associate partner, typing documents, editing and filing documents, type articles for publication, timekeeping on all 48 structural/civil engineers and drafting out the monthly bills for review and posting.

I enjoyed working with all in this department for all were great to work for.
Pros
enjoyable work environment.
