Sony Corporation of America (SCA) is a wholly owned subsidiary and the US headquarters of Japan's mighty Sony Corporation. Based in New York, SCA is made up of a number of global businesses that also have headquarters in the US, including Sony Electronics and Sony Mobile Communications (electronics and mobile); Sony Pictures Entertainment (film and – more... TV); Sony Music Entertainment and Sony/ATV Music Publishing (music); Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sony Online Entertainment (games); Sony Network Entertainment and Sony DADC (digital services); and other business like Illinois-based Sony Biotechnology, which supplies flow cytometry analysis and sorting technology for life science research.
Strategy
In April 2012 parent Sony Corporation appointed new president and CEO Kazuo Hirai. Hirai subsequently introduced a new top management structure to speed up decision making and strategic execution. Among his appointments was Michael Lynton (chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment), who become CEO of SCA and its integrated entertainment businesses.
Hirai says that entertainment is a bright spot in Sony Corporation's portfolio, and it supported the growth of its music business through a high-profile acquisition that was ultimately cleared by the European Union and the FTC. An investor group led by SCA acquired EMI Music Publishing from Citigroup in a $2.2 billion deal in June 2012. The investor group included SCA, the Estate of Michael Jackson, Mubadala Development Company, and David Geffen, among others. The acquisition brings together two of the world's leading music publishers, and Sony now controls the largest number of music copyrights in the industry, with more than 2 million. EMI Music Publishing will be folded into Sony subsidiary Sony/ATV Music Publishing, run jointly between Sony and Michael Jackson's estate. Sony/ATV represents the copyrights of Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, and Queen, among many other legendary artists. – less
