Job Work/Life Balance
Productive day of helping assist in setting up video and audio for different events.
Audio Visual Technician (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – October 15, 2012
Pros: schedule revolved around me, and very friendly environment.
Cons: not as many hours, and late shifts.
A typical day of me working as a Audio Video Technician would be me coming in on a set time and date (excluding my building shift) due to scheduled events that were arranged on the calendar. I would then – more... assist the host or coordinator in fulfilling their request for audio or visual and foresee the event to the very end. Therefore I would undo any work that was done prior.
What I learned was mostly about sound and visual. How sound travels, how to adjust sound levels, how to feed certain inputs into different mic lines and how to manage certain visual affects.
Usual the job only requires one person to get whats needed done but there are cases where there is a big events that requires more then one person's help. My co-workers consisted of fellow students that attend college as well. – less
Desk Assistant (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – June 8, 2015
Pros: Able to socialize, flexible scheduling, ability to complete school work at work.
Cons: No Breaks.
This job was ideal for a student such as myself. The work shift was never longer than 6 hours, and the management was very flexible when it came to schedule changes and shift coverage. The management let – more... us workers complete school work and other activities during our work shift, The work was fairly easy. Due to the tight work space, our relationships as co workers were extremely friendly, might even be describe as a mini family. There wasn't an extremely hard aspect of the job, but there were plenty of enjoyable things. The cookouts, the movie nights, and the best thing was the relationship that were built between residents and us desk assistants. – less
Internship (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – June 2, 2015
A typical day working at this job was doing school work in my office being offered to me and attending research meetings. I learned to keep a positive attitude while doing work and toward co workers no – more... matter how tiring the job is. My co- workers were nice and did their jobs. My hardest part of this job is getting over the consistent labor once I am use to the flow of what is to be done in the job. My most enjoyable part of the job is making new friends and having a chance to express myself to others while I am doing my work. – less

A typical work day involves using a database to enter potential student information for automated email correspondence. I've learned how to navigate several different databases used by the university for – more... communicating with potential students via email and how to filter emails to specific student or degree majors demographic. I enjoy working with all my fellow co-workers. I don't find much hard about the job; however, the database when it freezes up can be challenging. The most enjoyable part of my job is being efficient and constantly finding new work to preform without my direct supervisors instruction. – less

Pros: on campus
Cons: asking off is a pain
Started here because I was handy with computers and needed a job where I could do homework. I dont ever see management but this job isnt hard so I don't complain. The only parts that are "stressful" are cleaning up around the labs and doing inventory. – less

SIUC emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good workplace environment for student workers. The work pace is easy, birthday celebrations are common, and there are usually a few days each year for BBQ's.
Pros: meeting new people, great mentors and free lunches
Cons: no health care or pay
A typical day at work would include Answers incoming calls/records messages Filing confidential student paperwork,Xeroxing, Faxing and Shredding materials as needed.Assist with weekend classroom set-up/take – more... down and any other duties as assigned. I learned how important communicating your educational needs were. The management and co-workers were always helpful. The most enjoyable part of the job was preparing and participating in the graduation ceremonies. – less
