Taught high school age youth the basic of architecture.
Architecture Instructor (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – October 28, 2013
Pros: i was able to influence young peoples lives in a positive way.
Cons: because of the lack of leverage on the students it is hard to push students to do their best.
This job was a lot of fun. Although it is hard to keep order in a classroom where there is little leverage for maintaining order in the classroom the students don't get any grades or anything. The class pretty much required that I gained the students respect.Afterwards I am able to steer the direction of the class. A typical day usually starts by me – more... explaining a project and having the students start on the projects in teams. They usually have a lot of questions and complaints until I explain what I expect from them more thoroughly. A project usually last for about or a week or two or until most of the students in the class or finish. After that I explain a new project using 2 dimensional and 3D models or or projections. – less

Typical days was teaching a course on Java, office hours. Learned that I didn't want to be a teacher. Professors were great. Other graduate assistants were great too. Hardest part of the job was giving lectures. Best part was hanging out with the other grad assistants during office hours.

Productive and Fun Workplace with ambitious collegues
Math Tutor (Current Employee), Carbondale, IL – May 5, 2014
Math tutoring is a great way to enhance my leadership abilities. Learning how to accommodate different thought processes and also working paces help my understanding of what it takes to be a leader. Patience, knowledge, and ambition are just a few traits I'd use to describe what it takes. In addition, I must say accommodating different people is the – more... hardest part of Math Tutoring, – less
Productive and enjoyable environment with a moderate level of work.
Custodian (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – April 28, 2014
Pros: friendly environment
Cons: limited amount of hours
My typical work here consisted of me and my partner going through and making sure all rooms, labs, bathrooms, and offices are clean and organized. I learned of different chemicals to clean with and ways to help reduce odors like in the bathroom. My supervisor was willing to help out the workers as far as their work load and class schedules. The hardest – more... part of the day was having to go through and making sure you have cleaned all areas properly in the manner that was expected in time. The most enjoyable part were the times when one or more workers had to perform a task and we would have friendly co-workers helping out. – less
Administrative Assistant (Current Employee), Carbondale Illinois – April 25, 2014
Pros: excellent work environment, supportive staff, great learning experience
Work day included seeing clients and writing notes along with other administrative work.
I learned a lot about myself as a counselor and about the administrative and paper work part of counseling agencies.
The director and supervisors were the most supportive staff I have ever worked with. I could talk to them about personal issues as well as professional – more... consultation. They were very honest with feedback and allowed me to learn how to be an effective independent worker
My coworkers provided a warm and welcoming environment and were also very professional. we worked on very important projects together with great team work and products.
The hardest thing about the job was being a full time graduate student while also working dull time.
The great part about this job was that I was about to have flexibility in my schedule, which allowed me to be present mentally and physically for clients in need. It also helped me to have necessary time to provide quality services and note management for the cases assigned to me. – less
Resident Assistant (Former Employee), Carbondale, IL – April 14, 2014
Mainly I'm a student first, so just finding that balance between work and personal life takes time. Time-management is very important in the workplace because you can become overwhelmed with school work and your job.
My specific supervisors were great, others not so much.
Wetland Field Station Research Assistant/Manager (Current Employee), Carbondale IL – April 7, 2014
There are worse place to work and live, but also better. The University itself has some issues and generally lacks a coherent plan as far as I can tell. The department I worked in had some great people but there are a few distinct groups that generally do not interact (at least in a positive manner), furthering the lack of cohesion. Nothing terrible – more... ever happened though, and all of my immediate co-workers and supervisors were always great to work with. – less
Great workplace for a student as long as you can find a meaningful job.
Information Technology Assistant (Current Employee), Carbondale, IL – March 14, 2014
Majority of student employees are paid minimum wage, regardless of their job responsibilities. However, it is a great opportunity to get your feet wet, especially if you can find employment that is relevant to your studies.
