at SR-AHEC I learned the basic skills of a medical assistant. Obtained vitals for each patient visit. The people that trained me were very patient and understanding. A typical day at work will be viewing denied Insurance EOB (estimate of benefits) and making correction, resubitt claim fo paymen tand customer service. . I learned how to prioritize and stay informed on the different changes that occur. I learned how management is important to keep revenue up and keep hospital growing. SRMC is an good place overall but my department was horrible. A typical day was going in not knowing if you would be the next one to be chopped or to be made embarrased by the office manager in front of your coworkers. You were called in the office to be scolded at least twice a week. I learned never to treat anyone as aweful as I was. The hardest part of the job if trying to figure out how the work was so backlogged but management didnt know alot about the office. The structure of the office is poorly ran. Access case management is typically challenging, as you are responsible for tracking patients from all points of access into the hospital units (except the ED). You will need to have great patience and communication skills especially when dealing with the physicians who do not often understand the implications of lack of documentation and compliance – more... with the CMS regulations. The employees are particularly very friendly and willing to help. The hardest part of the job is not having electronic medical record, as such, you will need to literally scout all over the hospital to get to the patient's chart for review. Great place for a self-starter. Everyone is considered an expert in their field, so you work independently with very little supervision. Weekly interaction and meetings with the CFO, Director, Management, etc. to discuss issues and trends and come up with a collaberative decision on how to resolve the issues. The Southern Regional Medical Center is one of the few hospitals offering Indigent Care Funds. As a Spanish-speaking Financial Counselor, it was very rewarding working to meet the needs of patients. The hosptial clinical & non-clinical staff provided a very pleasant atmosphere, conducive to providing the best care.
