About Southern Wine & Spirits
Southern Wine & Spirits of America, fueled by alcohol, dominates nationwide. The company is one of the largest distributors of wine and spirits in the US. It represents more than 1,600 wine, beer, and spirits suppliers worldwide and offers some 5,000 different brands. Serving more than 200,000 customers, Southern Wine & Spirits of America regularly – more... ships 90 million cases a year and boasts operations in some 35 US states. The company's import products include Fosters, Grolsch, and Steinlager beers; cigars, such as Don Diego and Montecristo; and non-alcoholic beverages, including Clamato and Rose's Lime Juice. Southern Wine & Spirits of America was founded in Florida in 1968.
Strategy
Part of the company's success is its willingness to form joint ventures with fellow distributors to extend its reach into new states. It operates a strategic joint venture, formed in 2010, with Frederick P. Winner, Ltd., to distribute wine, spirits, and non-alcoholic products throughout Maryland and The District of Columbia. Through a joint venture with The Odom Corporation the distributor conducted business in the control states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. (Control states are those that regulate the sale of alcohol through a monopoly.) Southern Wine & Spirits of America bought out its partnership with Odom in 2012, ending their three-year alliance and allowing Odom to shift its focus back to beer, soft drinks, and non-alcoholic beverages in the Northwest and Alaska. For the wine and spirits distributor, buying out Odom's share in the joint venture bolsters its presence in Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
Mergers and Acquisitions
In 2011 Odom Corporation, along with Southern Wine & Spirits of America, acquired Cavatappi Distribuzione (a Washington-based wine wholesaler and distributor). The pair was enticed to purchase Cavatappi Distribuzione for its robust distribution network that consists of 35 distribution centers, a fleet of 1,500 trucks, and more than 6 million sq. ft. of inventory. Previously, Southern Wine & Spirits acquired Minnesota-based World Class Wines in 2010 and merged it with Southern Wine & Spirits of Minnesota, a joint venture operated with regional distributor J.J. Taylor. World Class Wines now constitutes the Minnesota joint venture's wine division. Adding to its operations in the state, the venture in 2012 purchased family-owned Quality Wine & Spirits Co., based in Bloomington, Minnesota.
