If you hate life, this is definitely the place for you
Propulsion technician (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CAApril 20, 2016
If you love working your life away this is the place for you. They substitute good pay and raises for mandatory overtime. You will work at least 50 hour weeks and usually weekends as well. Management has no idea what they are doing and will treat you very poorly. Stress levels are always at an all time high, you are being watched 24/7. You have at least 6-8 bosses which only care about themselves and sucking Elons balls. Get on any of their bad sides and they will find anything they could on the cameras or make stuff up to fire you. Makes for a horrible workplace. Most who work there are miserable, you will find this out after your first couple weeks on the job. Only way to get a raise is to find another job, put your 2 weeks in and they might give you a few bucks to stay. I DO NOT recommend working for SpaceX.
Pros
Free Diabetes from all the free sugar
Cons
Horrible management, no raises, no retirement, no appreciation, no work/life balance

Challenging and exciting work with excellent pay, poor work and life balance
Stainless Steel pipe welder and pipe fitter (Former Employee) –  Cape Canaveral, FLNovember 7, 2016
Day is typically spent continuing long term projects previously lined out by supervisors. I greatly increased my skill set of pipe welding by the challenging positions and locations needed to perform my duties, as well as became increasingly proficient in pipe fitting due to a somewhat lack of direction provided from engineering team for actual lengths to complete a particular system. Management at SpaceX is very unorganized with a lack communication between shifts and at times unclear or ever changing direction from the engineering department, resulting in scrapping projects halfway through fabrication or rework needed to include added spool pieces. The level of craftsmanship that can be found throughout the workforce is incredible. There are truly some of the best in the field working there. Lines are drawn though between the attitudes of employees and contractors which have led to petty rivalries that rarely treat contractors fairly. Morale among staff is generally above average, great pay and an exciting goal helps, however the long grueling hours, changing shift schedule, and limited time off can wear you down. Hardest part of job would be poor work/life balance, this place will work you hard. Best part of the job would be the challenge and high expectation of quality, as well as a sense of being a part of something historical and exciting.
Pros
Free food and excellent pay
Cons
No benefits for contractors, poor work/life balance

Fun place to work at.
Dining Room Attendant (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CAOctober 20, 2016
When I first started working at SpaceX I was so excited and thrilled to be part of history in the making.Just to say "I work at SpaceX" felt good.about a few months in I met lots of people made new friends and was adjusting to the work life of 10hrs +..After a while ive noticed employees talking about other employees or their supervisor. In my specific department there was a lot of DRAMA. A lot of talking trash about one another. It was very unprofessional and high school like. Other then the negative..the pay was good and overall experience was awesome.BUT your life is more work then family. You hardly get time to spend with your family and enjoy things outside of work.
Pros
Great food, cool experience, good pay
Cons
Not enough family time, over worked

SpaceX Employee (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CADecember 9, 2016
Single worst work environment you could find yourself in. Work until you fall over, then once you do fall over they tell you to get up or get out. If you have a family, or a life in general, that will fail to exist once you start. I have worked hard all my life but this is beyond acceptable. Also, speaking for myself, single biggest dumb$%$$ for a supervisor I have every worked for.
Pros
Its not prison, so you can quit.
Cons
Worst management I have ever seen, from the top down.

SR. PCB DESIGN ENGINEER (Current Employee) –  Redmond, WAJanuary 15, 2017
This is a great place to work. I find it personally fulfilling when a project gets completed and to be part of a bigger solution for the public in launching rockets for satellites, re-stocking the space station, and continuing on the future outlook to reaching Mars.
Pros
people, environment, free food, good management
Cons
none that I can think of

Long Hours
Free yogurt is not a benefit, its a treat.
Management can lose sight of its people while pushing the high demand of the builds.
We are making history with the kind of work that is being done and the dynamic of the team is most important. You will either love or hate working here.

Launch Intern (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CAJanuary 4, 2017
Never seen so many people in line with the vision. You work long hours, but it doesnt feel like it because you always have something to do, and are always learning. Organizational structure is pure meritocracy.free froyo and coffee, cheap lunch and dinner.

Propulsion Lead Technician (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CAOctober 17, 2016
Mangment there is ridiculous. Work and life balance needs a lot of improvement. Culture there, at least for me, was not good. Everyone is just looking out for themselves, to much back stabbing.

Unethical Management, Sweatshop Conditions, Burnout Work Hours
Inventory Control Clerk (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne,CAMay 16, 2016
Duties of an inventory controller are very simple but repetitive.

According to management the inventory department had a 50% employee turnover ratio (yearly). As a result, new employees are constantly being trained, hurting accuracy and efficiency. Another downside to poor retention was that the department was never sufficiently staffed. Backlogs regularly built up until management forced mandatory weekend work days.On the plus side, the lack of employee retention does allow for decently fast upward movement, I became the senior most controller in less than a year.

Low to mid level management is incompetent, constantly adjusting hours/schedules because inability to predict work load (ranging from 45-60+ hours weekly). Schedule changes severely affected income with biweekly work time swinging from 90 to 125 hours.Required weekend work days are tiring and strain families.

Main Inventory is located in a WWII era building, which lacks AC. It is extremely uncomfortable during the hottest months of the year. Roof regularly leaked on flight parts and expensive machinery. Management assured us that lead paint chips falling from the ceiling were harmless, although indoor eating areas had to tented to prevent paint ingestion.

Compensation is low, stock awards are insignificant ($5K vesting yearly over a 5 year period), yearly raises are low to none at all (2%).

It is unfortunate that management is so unethical, because the companies goal's are truly amazing. I am proud to have worked for SpaceX but am very happy to be moving on.

A hard job for little recognition
Application Product Manager (Current Employee) –  Hawthorne, CAFebruary 10, 2016
Although it is quoted that politics play no part in SpaceX culture, this is definitely not the case. Working hard, reaching and exceeding targets, or even innovating all count for nothing unless you let everyone in the company know. And this means every level of management above you.

Long and hard days are expected, but not compensated for. With a physical work space that is crowded and noisy.
Pros
Cheap Food, Stock Options/RSUs, Rocket Launches
Cons
Limited free time. Constant pressure

Great Operations Challenges and Culture
Lead Engineer (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CASeptember 9, 2015
SpaceX provides an extremely challenging and fun work environment. The missions are exciting and the culture is "google-style". Promotions are easy to obtain, however this leads to a lack in experience in management and on some engineering teams. Excessive work hours required. Average SpaceX'er age is ~27 years old. Biggest challenge, sustain 5 years of employment to secure 100% stock vesting.
Pros
Work environment, great food :), Amazing Mission
Cons
work/life balance, lack of experience on some teams, lack of management experience

Fast pace
Composite Lead (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CADecember 7, 2016
Spacex is a good fast paced environment to work in. the only downfall i would have to say is that they are inconsiderate to family affairs. I worked at Spacex for 4 years and found myself challenged everyday with new task that kept me mentally engaged in what i did.
Pros
Continous growth.
Cons
Inconsiderate to family affairs.

SpaceX will - Low ball your pay
mechanical engineer (Former Employee) –  Hawthorne, CANovember 26, 2015
I looked at going to SpaceX but then I saw how they had posted jobs for contractors to go and live remotely near Hawthorne California but only wanted to pay about $37.50 an hour.

You can bet that the job description was for advanced level work and the expectation that you could conceive and complete hand calculations on spacecraft and use sophisticated software.

Even a direct employee (4-6 years experience) with benefits ( Relocation, Vacation, Holidays) in this area gets a median income of about $101,000 per year.

Oh, but they want you to come and stay there for a few months on your dime, in this high cost area for a paltry $37.50/hr.

This is unethical and abusive for them to have shops advertise this absurd for long periods of time.

This practice speaks volumes about the nature of SpaceX management.

As the management, in all their file clerking glory, if they would work out of state for this this rate. For a certainty, the answer would be a resounding NO !!.

If they can sucker you into it, well all the better for them in their review.

Payload Technician (Current Employee) –  Cape Canaveral, FLJuly 1, 2016
Probably the most humbling job I have had aside contracting for the military. This is an amazing place to gain Aerospace knowledge and really make history!! However if you a family man, then prepare your family for long long long work days and insanely few days off. Right now its for the younger group and those that dont have kids and a life. if your ready to burn the midnight oil and make 100 grand in a year with 1500 hours or more in overtime, then this is for you!
Pros
History in the making
Cons
Too many hours, few days off, no home life
