About STANTEC CONSULTING

Stantec knows you don't become one of the top global design firms by standing around. Through more than 150 locations in North America, Caribbean, India, and Middle East, Stantec offers professional consulting services to both public and private-sector clients for all phases of a project's lifecycle. Services include planning, architecture, interior – more... design, landscape architecture, engineering, surveying, environmental remediation, and project management. Stantec has done interior design work for the expansion of Edmondton International Airport Terminal, rehabilitated sewer lines in Boston, and won a bid to bring solar and wind power to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Stantec was founded in 1954.

The company has earned a reputation as an aggressively acquisitive company, making more than 50 acquisitions since 1976: Growth through acquisitions is a major part of Stantec's business strategy. It typically seeks to buy North American-based architecture, engineering, and design companies with global client bases and expertise that covers a wide range of services and sectors. In this way, Stantec is able to maintain a diverse and comprehensive set of capabilities. This strategy may help it achieve its goal of becoming one of the top 10 global design firms.

The recession didn't slow down Stantec's acquisitions. In 2010 the company went on a shopping spree, acquiring about 10 firms that year. It built its architectural practice with the purchases of Burt Hill and Anshen+Allen, which specializes in health care and educational facilities in the US and the UK. The company also acquired design/engineering firm WilsonMiller, which has 10 offices throughout Florida. Other purchases that year included the assets of Wisconsin-based environmental services firm Natural Resources Consulting, Colorado's design firm CommArts, Atlanta-based transportation consulting firm Street Smarts, and ECO:LOGIC Engineering, a California-based water resources firm.

In 2011 Stantec acquired Canadian engineering firms QuadraTec and The Caltech Group as well as FSC Architects & Engineers, a specialist in the cold climate and remote locations of northern Canada. The company also bought Minnesota-based environmental engineering firm Bonestroo and Kentucky-based transportation specialist ENTRAN. In 2012 the firm agreed to buy transportation group ABMB Engineers as well as Canadian firms PHB Group and Cimarron Engineering.

Stantec plans to continue expanding its services and growing its geographic reach outside of North America. By 2020 the company hopes to generate up to 20% of its revenue from international work. Right now international work (beyond North America) counts for only 2% of revenues. Stantec entered India and the Middle East in 2010 after the acquisition of Anshen+Allen and Burt Hill. Other target markets include the UK, Europe, and Australia. – less
