Poor management with lack of advancement opportunities.
Underwriting Analyst - Energy (Current Employee) –  New York, NYSeptember 26, 2017
For someone looking to start their career off in insurance, I would recommend looking elsewhere. Starr suffers from a bad perception in the marketplace and lazy and sometimes incompetent management.

Environmental Underwriting Associate (Current Employee) –  New York, NYAugust 27, 2017
I felt that the job was slow, the responsibilities minimal, and the interest lacking. Certainly not a bad company, and a decent job if you're looking to get payed to not do much, but it wasn't as fast paced or engaged as I was hoping for.

Starr provides excellent health benefits for their employees, and their retirement plans are good as well. It's great to know that one has such excellent health coverage.

A place to learn insurance
Senior Underwriting Analyst (Former Employee) –  New York, NYApril 4, 2017
A work day here is very repetitive, as it can be in any other insurance company. The work day consist of, reserving submission, processing RMS, writing up referrals to home office, negotiating and providing quotes to brokers. Once quote is accepted, turning them in to binders then processing in systems for invoicing, and issuing policies.
Pros
Relaxed Environment
Cons
No push to promote or move up the ladder

It's okay. I've met a lot of nice people while working here. They provide good benefits. Not much room for upward movement. Management can be very picky.

Data Governance Intern (Former Employee) –  New York, NYNovember 23, 2014
The office is full of type A personalities and generally driven people. The management is excellent and gives you direction when needed but does not dominate your work life. It's a very good place to start as an underwriter. There is ample room to move up within the company.

Executive Assistant/Undersigning Assistant (Former Employee) –  Boston, MAJanuary 22, 2014
Starr Companies is great, and really made an effort to create a fantastic work environment. A typical day at work would start with attending to emails and voicemails. Then came all the clerical, getting out binders, endorsements, policies and meeting deadlines. I learned to be a team player and focused on giving 100% which came very easy as management was always approachable and willing to help.
