Administrative management
Deputy Director Administrative Assistant (Former Employee), Madison Wisconsin – April 3, 2013
Pros: traveled and attended conferences .
Administrative assistant to the Deputy Director of State Courts. I was responsible for the day to day operations of the office. Hiring new staff and managing the reserve judge system and training of coworkers.

It was a constant learning experience and very rewarding.

Hardest part of the job was dealing with difficult people.

Most enjoyable was working – more... with great professional people. – less

Dedicated employees, caring culture
HR Specialist (Current Employee), Madison, WI – March 15, 2013
Best parts:
Large organization means lots of possible positions/ specializations/ opportunities for advancement.
Generous time off, work/life balance.
Job security: even if budget cuts force lay-offs, there are reinstatement rules that make it far easier for laid-off employees to get another state job.
Lots of talented, professional people from a variety – more... of disciplines, all motivated to be here by their mission to serve the public good in various ways. Makes for an inspiring, never-boring place to work.

Worst parts:
Large organization means sometimes too much bureacracy, and slowness to change.
Generous time off means you can get stuck covering for your coworkers.
Job security means even a lazy or incompetent employee has a good chance of keeping their job. The consolation: people who are hard-working/talented who want to get ahead can. – less

Demanding, challenging, rewarding
Chief of Staff to First Lady (Current Employee), Madison, Wi – February 20, 2013
Although "typical" is far from how I would describe any day, a typical day includes excitement, challenge, and countless unique opportunities.

Fulfilling
Human Resources (Current Employee), Downtown Madison – February 15, 2013
Pros: (see review below)
Cons: parking downtown is expensive, but bus schedules work for me.
The bureau in which I work is a very positive environment with a great team and great leadership. There's is a lot to learn about state government, so there's good challenge and stimulation. My work team is great at collaborating, and we all learn from each other.

Very flexible employer, ability to help citizens of Wisconsin, professional co-workers, family oriented environment
Supervisor (Current Employee), Madison, Wisconsin – February 13, 2013
Pros: benefits, work/life balance
Cons: administrative changes & political environment, feeling that public doesn't appreciate what we do.
I have worked for the state for nearly 15 years and feel like I have grown in my career. I am currently a manager and love that I have the ability to make a difference for people accessing services from the State.
The team of people I work with for the most part are hard working professionals.
Each state agency will have a different culture. Some agencies – more... are better than others.
The hardest part of my job is when we have administrative changes, but that is true with private companies as well. – less

VERY political employer
Construction Representative/ Electrical Inspector (Former Employee), All over the state of Wisconsin – December 27, 2012
Pros: steady work, fair pay, good benefits
Cons: politics
Typical public sector employment. It is not who you are, or what you know, but WHO you know, that insured advancement in this tight-knit, government organization.

The work was fine and I enjoyed the challenges in the jobs, and working with professionals in the private sector.

The hardest part of the job was dealing with the politicos.

Rewarding client base, family-oriented atmosphere, high levels of staff turnover and increasing turmoil due to change in employer-employee relations.
IS Systems Development Services Specialist (Current Employee), Madison, WI – December 21, 2012
The State of Wisconsin is a public-sector employer that for years had supported the education and growth of it's Information Technology staff. The resources normally available to retain existing staff, provide training opportunities and maintain a stable work environment are no longer sustainable - creating an atmosphere of turmoil as employer-employee – more... relations have deteriorated in many agencies. Employees transfer or move to new positions in the 'best-available' areas of employment. Business area clients/customers remain loyal to seasoned IT staff in order to produce the best-possible product for external-facing partner agencies, i.e., county/local offices. Work is rewarding and can be challenging due to the occassional influx of newer application development technologies into existing architectures, i.e., conversion of web applications from asp.Net Web Forms written in VB.Net to C#/MVC/jQuery architecture methodologies. – less

Proctor (Current Employee), Madison, WI – July 12, 2012
Pros: the people i work with are awesome
Cons: no health benefits for lte
Limited Term Employess (LTE) do not get any credit for their years of working when applying for permanent positions. If you go on wisc.jobs, it says that one of the benefits of being an LTE employee is that you get the training necessary for permanent positions. You get the training but it does not help you get the job!

Must be very detail oriented
Health Specialist Program Coordinator Senior (Current Employee), Milwaukee, WI – July 8, 2012
Pros: vacation, heathcare benefits
I come with a great deal of knowledge based on experience from working in the Human Service field for over 24 years. The days go typically fast as there are many tasks to accomplish to keep the flow of customer benefits flowing & accurate .
The hardest part is the amount of work that never seems to run out in this type of field.
Helping out and training – more... co-workers is one of my tasks.
The most enjoyable part of the job is truly helping out our customers, after they were unable to get satisfaction prior to speaking to me.
Each day is very busy for me. I have to multi-task many duties with due dates based on my own schedule of priorities. While doing many assignments, I am also assisting staff with problems, questions, answering emails, responding to phone calls. This is all in an 8 hour day.
My position is equal to a Manager, therefore I cannot elaborate on this.
I have learned that everything cannot be completed in day, meaning "Rome was not built in a day" in this line of work. – less
