Sterling Chemicals, Inc. is a North American producer of selected petrochemicals used to manufacture an array of consumer goods and industrial products. The Company's primary products are acetic acid and plasticizers. Its acetic acid is used primarily to manufacture vinyl acetate monomer, which is used in a variety of products, including adhesives and – more... surface coatings. Its plasticizers are used to make flexible plastics, such as shower curtains, floor coverings, automotive parts and construction materials. The Company manufactures all of its petrochemicals products at its site in Texas City, Texas. Sterling Chemicals owns the acetic acid, styrene and plasticizers manufacturing units located at its Texas City site. Pursuant to the Company’s acetic acid production agreement, all of its acetic acid production is sold to BP Amoco Chemicals Company (BP Chemicals). As of December 31, 2008, the Company operated in two segments: acetic acid and plasticizers.
