The work is rewarding. The pay should be more. On call shifts are paid poorly and add to the time taken away from family. Tuition reimbursement should be be much easier

Productive workplace. Learning new systems is always a plus. 45 minute lunch is too short. No afternoon break at all. No eating at your desk. Boss was not friendly.

Slow paced, poorly managed
Lead Programmer Analyst (Former Employee) –  Stony Brook, NYNovember 17, 2017
If you like slow paces (at least on the non-clinical side) and limited advancement, this is the place for you. You truly don't have to do much at this organization and you still collect a check regardless. Management sees anyone new as a threat and will stomp out any growth or advancement. Many departments (again, non-clinical) have one half that constantly is busy while the other half mostly browses the Internet.
Pros
Benefits can't really be beat (pension, insurance)
Cons
No room for growth, stifling especially to young workers who are trying to be ambitious

Registered Nurse
Registered Nurse (Former Employee) –  Stony Brook, NYNovember 14, 2017
this is a huge teaching hospital with over 600 beds. it still seemed to be filled to the brim and the emergency department needs help. they implemented float days which helps but they need more staff. the pay needs to be more competitive especially with North Shore offering higher pay. This has to go through the state of course. But the benefits are amazing, covers so much, a pension after you are vested and many other discounts like at verizon, etc. if you want experience and moving around with quick advancement at a Level 1 trauma hospital this is for you! The staff is friendly enough but it is mostly women so there are obviously many different personalities.
Pros
pension, benefits and advancement
Cons
short breaks, half hour in 12 hours is crazy

Lab Assistant (Former Employee) –  Stony Brook, NYSeptember 28, 2017
I worked the mid day shift so 10 am to 6pm. I liked working closely with the doctors and resident doctors in the grossing room. You learn so much about the human body. I would have loved to stay here but I was seeking a position in nursing and there was no option for growth for me in this department.
Pros
Educational
Cons
Sometimes there is an excessive work load

Invasive Cardiology / Cath Lab Tech (Former Employee) –  Stony Brook, NYSeptember 19, 2017
As mentioned, generally all the employees worked hard to make the system work.
The program was deluged with problem patients that other hospital refused.
Yet, our program dealt with such.
Fast paced.
Top Quality given the time restraints.
Pros
all benefits, as expected for full time employee
Cons
understaffed for the work load

Worked short period of time at the institution, expected different work culture since ts an academic teaching hospital. There's a work/life balance, but doesn't compensate for essential responsibilities within your work environment.

flexibility

Great Place to work
Consultant for Jzanus (Former Employee) –  Stony Brook, NYJuly 27, 2017
Stony Brook is a great place to work, and also learn. They are well rounded, and very proficient in registering patient's in the ER, as well as having the patients pre- register a week in advance for scheduled surgeries via the phone, which gave us time to obtain pre-certs, and gather other important documents.

Dietary Aide (Former Employee) –  New York, NYJuly 15, 2017
a typical day at work is like rolling silverware, when the food for the patients is ready the elevator assists you to the correct floor you wil be on for the day/night

i learned a lot about peoples diets and what they can and cannot have

management at the present time i was there wasnt very friendly and if you had any questions the manager didnt make you 100% comfortable to ask.

the hardest part of the job was working in the kitchen and preparing each tray that came down on the tray line at a very fast pace

the most enjoyable part of the job was seeing all the patients happy and enjoying their food and the staff was always so helpful.
Pros
6 dollar food card
Cons
limited hours
