The sun isn't setting on this company any time soon. Somerset Tire Service (STS) operates more than 130 STS Tire & Auto Centers throughout New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. The company sells tires, auto parts, batteries, and accessories. Locations feature a window between the store and service bays, so customers can watch the work being done on their cars. STS has grown over the years through acquisitions of other regional tire and service centers, and it hopes to saturate the Northeast before moving outside its home region. Founded in 1958, the company is employee-owned.
Strengthening its distribution network, STS began operations at a 200,000-sq.-ft. warehouse in Bridgewater Township, New Jersey, in 2010. The facility is STS's largest (of seven total), and it is capable of storing 325,000 tires and has about 20 loading docks. The facility will serve the company's retail stores and wholesale customers on the East Coast. (Wholesale customers generate 15% to 20% of annual sales.) STS began work on the facility in 2005. The company owned the land on which the facility was built since 1971, however, it did not start construction until decades later because the land was classified as "brownfield" (for high arsenic levels) and required substantial cleanup to be usable. (STS did not know the extent of the pollution at the time of purchase.) The company was recognized for its environmental commitment after cleanup efforts and construction were completed. – less
