A typical day at work involved assisting residents in ways such as, transferring, bathing/showering, putting on ted hose, making residents bed, assist in feeding, and reporting any physical/emotional problems to the wellness nurse. I learned to be very independent, keep constant communication, and interact with elderly folks. Cons: short breaks, frequent turn over for management, low pay, no employee appreciation
The company itself is horrible. Too many changes in management too frequently. Rules change depending on the situation. The pay is above minimum but definitely does not match the work you are expected to do. Frequent call offs make the job harder, management won't jump in to help even though there's supposed to be a "whole team" approach...meaning no – more... matter what level you are, you're there to help.
There's definitely separation between management and hourly staff. Marketing and sales seem to say whatever to sell a room, make promises that can't be kept. The vibe you get is that management could care less about the residents, it's all about the money to them!! I would never allow anyone I love to live there. – less

Care for 5-6 dementia patients on a locked floor, including ADL's, feeding, exercising, and re-orientating. Learned to care for disabled adults and worked closely with nurses. Management was poorly trained and did not consistently manage workers. Co-workers ranged from excellent to insolent. Highly stressful environment with little support and very poor management

Cons: very demanding job, little support, poor management, and high turnover
Sunrise as an organization (and at the corporate level) is a leader in the senior living industry and wants the best for its residents and employees. They have very high standards and many quality initiatives or "signatures" as they are referred to (although some are unrealistic and very difficult to maintain without a true team effort), are very policy-oriented. – more... and provide excellent training. They have significantly improved their operations in recent years, but have a ways to go to truly be the employer of choice.

However, this particular community (Newtown Square, PA) is absolutely horrific, with very low census, high turnover (particularly with department heads/coordinators), a very weak and inept Executive Director and fractured management team, a highly stressful environment with little support when it really is needed, low employee and resident morale, and a building that needs some major cleaning and upkeep,

I would strongly advise anyone who is considering a position at this particular Sunrise community to STAY AWAY and save yourself from a miserable and agonizing work experience!! – less

I love my residents and many of my co-workers but Sunrise Newtown square is not a good place to work. They work you like a dog and pay you peanuts. You don't stop from the time you clock in until the time you clock out which by the way you NEVER clock out on time. Management does not appreciate all the hard work they say they need to stop overtime. – more... The director uses the terms "make residents" do this or that and "because I'm the boss I can do what I want" including having socials where she enjoys consuming plenty of alcohol. Sunrise Assisted Living is a great place to experience and share the love and care level for our senior population. It is a gratifying place to work! A typical day was greeting each resident and exchanging hugs. Helping them to bathe, dress and mobilize for their day which always began with a great and hearty breakfast prepared by the culinary staff. – more... I learned that hey could do much more for me than I could ever do for them, but I truly enjoyed trying, especially when someone who hadn't walked in weeks walked for you. Management was caring and wanted each day in the life of a resident to be a step forward. The co-workers were of the same mind and worked toward the same goal, which was to enhance the life of every resident they serviced. The most enjoyable part of the job was when a family member expressed their gratitude for a positive moment that was expressed or was evident in the life of their parent, or other family member. The hardest part of the job was not showing sadness toward a resident who never had a visitor while experiencing their observance of other resident friends go off for the day with their family and friends. The most enjoyable part of the day was listening to the stories they would tell of their life long experiences or the huge smiles on their faces, while playing a game, when they would remember the answer to a question, or receive an unexpected gift for winning the game. But most of the time, everyone who played received something at the end of the game. – less
