Site-Coordinator (Former Employee) –  San Jose, CAJanuary 20, 2017
It was a small group of employees that were great in providing motivation to one another. Everyone is available to help each other in order to excel in their assignments. I was able to learn management of a large group of students in allowing me to place each student in the proper program to help them excel in their studies, such as math and English.

helps alot of people, but is a stressful place to work
Administrator/ Director/ Teacher (Former Employee) –  AK, AZ, MA, OKJanuary 17, 2017
High stress place to work, a lot of turnover, hard to schedule your day when test are scheduled without your knowledge of their day/time until the morning of, which can make it difficult if you are the only person there and you are already scheduled to do parent conferences......that being said, what this program can do for students is amazing, but sometimes heartbreaking when doing the initial testing when you see how much they've fallen behind.
Pros
what they can do for the students
Cons
scheduling

Supplemental Income with a flexible Schedule
Supervisor/Tutor at Sylvan Mission Sattellite (Current Employee) –  McAllen, TXJanuary 16, 2017
Sylvan Learning Centers are a large tutoring outfit in the United States with offices in various States across the country. As a tutor you can expect to have a very flexible schedule that meets the demands of your other work places, however, your schedule is subject to change so expect no more than 3 to 4 hours tops per day. Work days are Monday through Saturday. It may be hard for you to find enough hours to meet your demands if you do not have any teaching experience. Most sylvan instructors are preferred with teacher certification, but a 4 year degree will suffice. They give preference to their certified teachers, but if you show you are capable, willing and hardworking they will give you preference. Still be advised that tutoring is mostly in the afternoons due to school hours and thus your schedule may still be limited.

A typical day at work consist of greeting students and teaching them for periods of 1 hour or more using the Sylvan Sync software on the iPads. A period consists of exactly one hour comprised of 50 minutes of instruction and a Short 10 minute break to log students work and prepare for the next hour.

Skills I learned included and improved included reading, math and sciences tutoring. Student management, and parental interactions, and how to assist students with learning disabilities.

The management is strong and reliable with a friendly disposition.
Co-workers are friendly and committed to their work.

The hardest part of this job will be managing students who might possibly have some form of learning disability. Sylvan Learning does not
more... directly test for learning disabilities. As such, you must have a calm and collected personality, and be able to cope with the stress of managing kids who may provide significant challenge.

The best part of this job is watching the grin on the faces and the glint in the eyes of the kids when they finally get what you are trying to explain to them. It's satisfying, believe me.

Pros

It was an average educational tutoring center
Educational Tutor (Former Employee) –  Cincinnati, OHJanuary 4, 2017
The center provided beneficial academic tutoring to some students.
Drawbacks, however, were that each tutor was teaching up to three students at the same time...in potentially different subjects.
I'm sure the effectiveness of the instruction was not always completely helpful.

Teacher’s Aide (Current Employee) –  Northridge, CADecember 21, 2016
Great for experience, wish things were a bit more organized however working there was a good experience. I did not like that instead of being paid biweekly you only get paid on the 5th and 20th of every month, inconvenient.

Fun Tutoring Service
Tutor (Former Employee) –  Fremont, CADecember 6, 2016
Typical day at work included working several sessions, each one hour long. During a session, you can be assigned 1-3 students to work with. Most enjoyable part of the job was interacting with kids on a more personal level and getting to know them.

It was interesting, working with three to four students at the same time.
Tutor (Former Employee) –  Merrillville, INNovember 28, 2016
The lesson of review with the students was not on their homework, it
was base on a test that Sylvan had given them to evaluate area of knowledge or lacking skills in reading or math. Each student was different, so there was a different lesson plan for each student you had at the table.
Pros
Enjoy the student, glad to see them improve in their skills
Cons
Could not always answer homework questions, student wanted

Excellent part-time after school day job for experienced non-CA credential teachers. You are given a school, classroom, and lesson plan to teach a small group of student that are having difficulty in Math or other subjects during after school hours.

Learnning Center for school aged children; warm atmosphere
Director of Innovation & Operations (Former Employee) –  Ellicott City, MDNovember 12, 2016
Company has been going through some organizational changes. Relocated corporate HQ to Hunt Valley, MD (from Baltimore). Focus is now on building STEM programs and opening up foreign markets.

Reading & Math programs are still strong. Instruction is on the IPADs and adheres to common core. Writing Program needs updating. College prep (SAT/ACT) programs are competitive.

Center Directors have good autonomy--requires discipline and strong work ethic.
Pros
Autonomy; Warm atmosphere; comfortable waiting room for parents
Cons
long hours; frequent chnages in upper management; weak bonus plan

Teach for a couple of hours about three times a week.
Teacher (Former Employee) –  Oklahoma City, OKNovember 3, 2016
I worked as a teacher for Sylvan and the pressure as a teacher is tremendous. If a kid complains to mama about you, because you had them spit out their bubble gum so they can focus, then you are toast.
Pros
a paycheck, working one on one at times. Most of the time 3 students in an hour.
Cons
stressful and you have to teach 3 students in one hour and that is called classroom management.

Amazing place to work, lots of room for growth for opportunities
Service Director (Former Employee) –  Riverton, UTOctober 18, 2016
A day as a service director is fun and exciting. You get to work with kids individually and understand their background story. Occasionally you had a conversation with the parents, but majority of the day is spent with the kids. Mornings are spent filing paperwork, preparing paper work, and getting supplies ready for the kids. Afternoons are spent assigning the kids to the correct teacher and making sure they have a positive experiance. If you love making a difference, love helping children out with academics and even self image, Sylvan is the place for you! If it wasn't for me moving out of state, I would be working here for a very long time.
Pros
Management, Fridays and Sundays off, schedule flexibility

Relaxed atmosphere
Math Tutor (Current Employee) –  Brownsville, TXOctober 10, 2016
Working at Sylvan Learning Center was a very friendly atmosphere. A positive vibe was felt throughout the center.

I love working there! My co-workers are friendly, and the students really do their best with learning.

I would tutor Mathematics to mostly high school and middle school students.

The hardest part of the job, I'd say, was to try to find what worked best for a student's approach to learning. We only have an hour to work with a student, and with working with more than one student at a time, it was very hard to try to think of a way to learn, while other students needed help. But it was a fun challenge.
Pros
Positive atmosphere
Cons
The fluctuation of hours
