T.O.P.S.

TOPS® is committed to maintaining a link to current research on issues that affect our members. We've partnered with the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the results of that partnership have been astounding. Here you will find an overview of the history, contributions, and findings of TOPS-funded research.

In 1966, Esther S. Manz realized her
 – more... long-held dream. With a check for $250,000.00, she established a TOPS-funded obesity research program, laying the foundation for obesity research central to TOPS' mission.

The program, called the TOPS Club, Inc. Obesity and Metabolic Research Program, now located at the Medical College of Wisconsin, conducts research in clinical obesity and related disorders to find causes and remedies.

This research has led to the identification of several genes that could govern eating behaviors and control food breakdown. Proteins controlled by these genes appear to play a major role in deciding whether fats will be burned or stored.

Led by TOPS' current medical advisor, Ahmed Kissebah, MD, PhD, this research aims to identify the biological mechanisms central to obesity and its complications, such as diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease. It is hoped that the research will ultimately lead to accurate and scientific ways to prevent and possibly reverse the cycle of weight- a problem that affects over one-third of adult Americans.

In 1994, the TOPS Center for Metabolic Research was dedicated at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The center includes the Esther S. Manz Laboratory and the Ronald K. Kalkhoff Library. The late Dr. Kalkhoff was TOPS' original medical advisor.

Since 1966, over $5.4 million in TOPS earnings and member contributions have funded this valuable research. – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
