The position is responsible for the timeliness, accuracy and integrity of the financial reports, audit and systems of Temple Sholom, a not for profit organization. Responsibilities also include analysis and improvement of the operating procedures for all programs and financial systems to ensure an appropriate level of internal control over financial reporting and the safe guarding of assets. In addition, this position is responsible for managing and assisting in Human Resources related activities. To execute these responsibilities, the individual must communicate effectively with all levels of staff within the organization, Board members, vendors, outside agencies and membership. Critical to the success of this individual will be the qualities of initiative and follow through, the ability to research all aspects of the problem and to recommend, and after approval, to implement and verify solutions.


A. Production, evolution and utilization of monthly operating reports including financial statements, statistical reports, productivity analysis and commentary used by management and Board of Trustees to assess the ongoing financial health and operations of the organization.

B. Continuous improvement and assessment of internal controls, policies and procedures to ensure: appropriateness, consistent application, their ability to ensure reliable financial reporting and safeguarding the organization’s assets.

C. Maintaining the Temple computer systems including both Financial Edge and Chaverware, becoming an expert in said systems; acts as in-house educator/advisor to all staff in the effective and efficient use of systems.

D. Drives and manages Chaverware billing process and accounts receivable, for all programs in partnership with department management, including: membership mandatory and voluntary fees, nursery school and religious school.

E. Supervises, mentors and supports activities of Temple Bookkeeper, providing opportunities for training and development, assists with accounts payable processing and check issuance using Financial Edge and all Chaverware day to day activities.

F. Proactively drives the budget process, including the presentation to the Finance Committee and the Board of Trustees. Supports and assists the Executive Director with all aspects of budgeting.

G. Responsible for the efficient and effective day to day functions of all of the Temple’s business operations, including payroll processing and benefits.

H. Serves as a partner with managers with regard to the financial impact of decisions, and as a consultant during the budget process, providing help and support.

I. Manages the year-end close and audit process, ensuring efficient utilization of auditor’s time and control of audit cost.

J. Comprehensively supports Temple staff as needed during events and the High Holidays.

K. Special projects as assigned.


  • Five years relevant not for profit management, accounting and systems experience.
  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance. Masters Degree preferred.
  • Working knowledge of non-profit and fund accounting.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Outlook and computerized accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of Financial Edge and Chaverware a plus
  • Excellent communication/strong interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently, start a project and manage it to completion.
  • Demonstrated problem solving ability.
