Employee-owned Terracon Consultants provides geotechnical, environmental, construction material evaluation, pavement engineering and construction management, and facilities engineering services. One of the nation's top design firms, the company serves the agriculture, energy, telecommunications, commercial development, and transportation sectors, as well as government clients. Founded in Iowa in 1965, Terracon began as a joint venture between Shive, Hall and Hattery (civil consulting), Soil Testing Services (geotechnical testing), and Gerald Olson, P.E. (the company's founder and a project engineer). The company now has more than 130 offices in some 40 states.

Mergers and Acquisitions
Terracon has expanded its geotechnical, environmental, engineering, and testing capabilities with a string of recent purchases. In 2012 it acquired California-based Earthtec, Inc., a provider of geotechnical, environmental, special inspection and other services to clients in Northern California. Also in 2012 it purchased Utah-based IHI Environmental, a provider of industrial hygiene, occupational safety, and environmental consulting services to public and private sector clients across the western US. Previously, Terracon bought Colorado firm Geotechnical Engineering Group, boosting its presence in the West; and Stafford Consulting Engineers, a building envelope system specialist with a presence in the Southeast. Also that year Terracon acquired Dressler Consulting Engineers, a building forensics engineering firm based in Kansas and Nodarse & Associates, a Florida-based environmental, geotechnical, and construction materials engineering firm.
