Good for young person with no strings attached
Certified Materials Inspector (Former Employee), Bettendorf, IAOctober 21, 2013
Pros: some good people to work around
Cons: travel. pay. benefits. managements inability to care. hours.
For the amount of hours you put in its not worth it. Work you ragged and then all of a sudden cut your hours and expect you to come in for 4 hour time slots. Good for someone with no family or attachments. Travel long ways with long hours. Be nice if they'd offer a company vehicle. Management makes all the money, technicians get crapped on. Actually – more... made more money through temp agency then when I was officially a company employee. Agreed it's the wal mart of this profession. Don't waste your time. – less

Placed a lean on my credit for leaving the company! Office manager would not talk to me after I left. Didn't like the fact I was advancing.

Administrative Manager II (Former Employee), Sparks, NVAugust 13, 2013
The corporate mindset has changed over the last few years from employee oriented to driving the stock prices up at all costs, especially at the cost of employees.

Project Manager (Current Employee), St. Louis, MOAugust 11, 2013
Just an average company to work for. Recent layoffs have left the company understaffed and the workload at most offices is unrelenting. Not a very good work-home balance. As with most consulting companies, the number one priority is to crank out the billable hours, rather than work quality. They pay less than most consulting companies.

Construction Materials Technician (Former Employee), Greenville, SCJune 11, 2013
Hot days in the sun, driving around all over the state. Nothing funner than pounding a metal cylinder in the ground and having to dig it out again.

I worked in the Albuquerque office which turned out to not be a very good place to be as geologist. Very limited opportunity to grow or work.

Senior Secretary (Former Employee), Wichita, KSApril 26, 2013
Most of the time was spent typing up bid proposals. Other than the main manager, management staff and co-workers were great to work with. The hardest part of the job was trying to cope with the main manager getting made and throwing things around and cussing. The most enjoyable part was when the main manager was gone and the office wasn't so tense.

Pros: great place to work
Cons: limited opprtunities for advancement with my education and skill level
This a great place to work at as you are surrounded by great co workers. A typical day start at 0700hrs and you work until finished on assigned jobs.

You can do better then . .
Senior Field Technician (Former Employee), Greeley, COMarch 11, 2013
Pros: benefit package, improving safety culture
Cons: security, inadequate truck fleet, work-life balance
. . this company, whether you are a client or an employee. While Terracon offers an above-average benefit package, the salaries are below-average. Raises capped at 2.3% for EVERYBODY, so you won't even keep up with Cost-Of-Living expenses. Unique chargeability structure means that you will not be able to take an actual vacation without hitting your – more... 85% chargeability basement, which is when you will be fired. Vacation, certification acquisition, holidays also count against your chargeability. Staff has more security then non-staff personnel, but you're still just a kid with the flu away from being let go. As for work/life balance - if Terracon wanted you to have a life, they would issue you one with your safety duffle on the first day. Field vehicles 2WD, not up to going onto muddy construction sites or snowy roads. Tools tend to be dilapidated and inadequate. Company places heavy emphasis on safety culture, although this is likely a tactic to decrease internal insurance costs. Co-workers are generally decent, but not many want to be at Terracon for life. Just be sure to do your due diligence when investigating this company - if NOBODY else offers you a position, then Terracon could be a good place to get your feet wet. – less

the walmart of engineering
project manager (Former Employee), east coastJanuary 24, 2013
Pros: good coworkers
Cons: bad management
If you are a young college grad with an EIT, stay away from this place. They will work you for over 50 hours and send you out of town. Sometimes for weeks at a time. If you ask for more money they will actually laugh at you. Not kidding. This company is set up to run on low payed, young people that management can grind into the ground. Long hours sometimes, – more... sometimes no hours depending on weather. Pay checks for hourly employees can be varying from one to the next. Forget learning under a PE. You will pump out reports like a machine, generic and informal. – less

Great place to work if you hate your family and personal life
Field tech / project manager (Former Employee), Baton Rouge, LAOctober 17, 2012
Pros: all the coffee you can drink
Cons: terrible upper management
Terracon abuses hourly workers. No set schedules and terrible management from the top down. Managers are out if touch with what it is like to work by the hour. Techs are abused and then discarded when work slows down. Pay is not great. Good luck finding a tech that has worked at terracon for more than 5 years. Management shows absolutely no leadership – more... ability at all. No room at all for advancement. – less

Company is a joke
Project Manager (Former Employee), Jackson, MSJuly 31, 2012
Pros: good coffee
Cons: rude people, health ins and benefits suck, department man is a narcissist and a horrible manager
Upper management is horrible. The company is run by PM's and techs but the pay and benefits go to the principals and VP's. Work load is stressful and when you make the company money nobody says anything but when you mess up it's the end of the world. After working at several of these firms they are all like this.
