Bama makes bakery products and markets them around the globe. It serves large customers such as McDonald's Corp. and also sells items under its own name. Last December, Bama announced it was investing $11.5 million in a third dough line at its frozen dough facility at 2435 N. Lewis Ave. and $1.5 million in a research and development facility, the Marshall-Tech – more... Center, on the second floor of the company's location at 2745 E. 11th St.
"The dough line was driven by demand from an existing customer," said Tim Paul, Bama's director of finance.
He said Bama plans to add 252 jobs in the next 10 years, including 215 during the next three years. Those totals include the 50 already hired.
"It's good news to be adding jobs in this environment," Paul said.
The jobs will earn Bama about $3 million in payroll benefits through the company's participation in the Oklahoma Quality Jobs program. A press release issued Thursday by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, which administers the jobs program, incorrectly listed Bama as planning to add more than 700 jobs during the period. Another recent participant in the Quality Jobs program is Manhattan West Interiors, a new manufacturing subsidiary of the 60-year-old Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Manhattan Store Interiors.
Manhattan West designs and fabricates fixtures for retailers, including the May, Federated and Neiman Marcus department stores.
The manufacturing firm will add 115 jobs in Tulsa within three years, with a total of 150 new positions at the end of 10 years. Its total program benefit will be about $1.75 million.
Jim McIntyre, director of operations, said Manhattan West will need saw operators, assemblers, laminators and other production people.
While wages for unskilled workers start at $8 an hour, McIntyre said he does not yet know what other salary levels might be.
Manhattan West began operating in February with six employees in 20,000 square feet of space at 2929 E. Apache St., McIntyre said. The company's work space jumped to 40,000 square feet two months later, and there now are 24 employees, he said.
"They (the parent company) want to make us their largest manufacturing facility," McIntyre said.
