The Children's Place Association Residential Center also provides care to another group of extremely vulnerable children , state wards with serious medical issues. In the past several years, there has been an increase in the number of medically fragile and disabled children who suffer from abuse and neglect. Research has found that children with medical issues are at least two times as vulnerable to physical abuse , and four to ten times as vulnerable to sexual abuse - as their non-disabled peers. Children struggling with diseases such as cerebral palsy, pediatric cancer, and severe juvenile diabetes need a safe haven where they can receive both medical care and social interventions until they can be placed in stable homes with foster/adoptive parents. For these children, the Residential Center provides safety, security and a chance to heal.
The Children's Place Association has more than fifteen years of experience providing medical and residential care to some of the most at-risk children in Chicago , those impacted by HIV/AIDS and other serious medical issues. Since opening in 1991, The Residential Center has been a beacon of hope to more than 800 children, providing supports that go beyond just the mere survival of illness to enhancing a quality of life that includes educational progress, social development and emotional growth.
