The shared objective of all The Frostig Center’s unique programs is to enrich and enhance the lives of children with learning disabilities. We were founded in 1951 by Marianne Frostig, Ph.D., who was a pioneer, leader and advocate in education for children with learning disabilities. In fact, she was helping children with learning disabilities before there was even a medical term for this diagnosis.
Here is what we do at The Frostig Center:
For over 60 years, we have placed a major emphasis on research and have become nationally and internationally renowned. Our most influential research project is a 20-year longitudinal study. It identifies key factors that help predict success, enabling children with learning disabilities to become productive members of society as adults. We regularly publish in professional journals and participate in conferences worldwide.
Professional Development and Consultation
The Frostig Center offers a strong community outreach program to educators, other professionals and parents through our Consultation and Education Department. Last year alone, we trained over 800 public and private school teachers, and administrators in Southern California. We also provide on-site consultation, offer professional as well as parent education seminars, and conduct workshops and staff development institutes.
Education for Children in Grades 1-12
The Frostig School offers a full range of academic and support services for children in grades 1-12 who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities such as dyslexia and dysgraphia, ADHD, and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders (High Functioning Autism, Asperger’s and Pervasive Development Disorder). To ensure every child is learning to his/her fullest potential, we maintain a small classroom size of 12 students or less with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Our school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and certified by the California Department of Education. An extensive array of elective programs (art, film, drama, music and computer technology) is also offered, encouraging students to thrive and excel.
