PublicAffairs, a current-affairs-focused nonfiction imprint of the Perseus Books Group, is looking for an associate publicist or publicist to join our publicity team. Publicity is of paramount importance to our business model, so we’re looking for a dynamic, creative, enthusiastic individual to help keep our groundbreaking books and authors in the news.

PublicAffairs publishes about 50 original titles per year, primarily narrative nonfiction with an emphasis on current events, politics, business, and science/technology. Our list is a carefully-selected cross-section of the top original and innovative thinkers writing today, from the many bestsellers by George Soros, to Teach For America founder Wendy Kopp’s books on progressive education, to the Goldman Sachs/Financial Times Book of the Year POOR ECONOMICS, to the film tie-in #1 New York Times bestseller WAITING FOR SUPERMAN.

As part of the PublicAffairs publicity team, you’ll handle nonfiction publicity campaigns from manuscript through publication, including creating press materials, planning tours and events, facilitating reviews and feature pieces, booking interviews, arranging travel, and working with our marketing department to create an online and social media strategy for the book. You’ll work with the many organizations associated with our authors, from Participant Media to Partners In Health to the One Acre Fund. You’ll also help shape PublicAffairs’ overall publicity strategy through meetings with media, conversations with editors about potential and upcoming projects, and preparing publicity materials for sales meetings.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • 2-4 years publicity experience, preferably in trade publishing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A desire to take on more responsibility and initiative in shepherding his or her own projects
  • Strong organizational skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Poise and confidence in communicating with authors and media
  • Interest in current events, politics, and business; obsession with news and news media
