Whether you're tracking closeouts or quail, The Sportsman's Guide wants to join the hunt. The catalog and online retailer offers discounted apparel and footwear, hunting and fishing gear, camping equipment, sporting goods, automotive accessories, and tools, among other items for the outdoorsman. In addition to its main catalog, The Sportsman's Guide produces specialty catalogs with an extended range of merchandise in the hunting, shooting, and military surplus categories. It recently added two new brands: BoatingSavings.com and WorkWearSavings.com to its online offering. Founded in 1970, the company is owned by direct marketer Redcats USA, itself part of the PPR-owned Redcats Group.
In June 2009 Redcats USA named Jay Berlin as chief executive of The Sportsman's Guide. Prior to his appointment, Berlin logged 25 years as an executive for such companies as United Health Group Alliance and Northern Tool & Equipment. Under Berlin, the online retailer in 2010 began offering supplies and equipment for recreational boaters and work clothes for men and women at a pair of new new websites: BoatingSavings.com and WorkWearSavings.com. The Sportsman's Guide now also ships to Canada.
Although its roots are in catalog retailing, The Sportsman's Guide's has come to embrace (and excel) in the online marketplace. About 70% of sales are generated through the company's e-commerce site. The site also has a nearly 20% conversion rate, an enviable figure among online retailers. (Conversion rates measure the number of customers compared to the total number of visitors.) – less
