Practicum Student & LPC-Intern, Dallas, TX - April 24, 2017
I am thankful for my supervisor in the trauma unit, Judy Keith. This was my first experience in a psychiatric hospital, and there was a lot to learn. I appreciated how my supervisor encouraged the balance between documentation, discharge planning, and therapy. I chose the trauma unit at Timberlawn Mental Health System since it was one of the few psych hospitals that offered individual and group therapy. I absolutely loved group therapy more than I ever thought I would -- it was a great combination of therapy and teaching experience. I also benefited from the weekly meetings to staff cases with the treatment team (Psychiatrists, Nurses, UR, Social Workers, etc.). The hardest part was at the end when TMHS was under investigation. There were many unknowns and job security was at it's lowest. The management of the facility seemed very inconsistent, but they were experiencing a great deal of stress with the audit from the joint commission and CMS.
