Safety Attendant, Carson, CA - July 8, 2013
Start early, work a 12hr shift, and sometimes will work for 13 days straight with one day off during a turnaround period. Good pay during this time but when there is no work then there is no work and this is what made me leave simply because I have a family to support. A typical day on the job consisted of bottle watching for craftsmen, operators, and other personnel that would be performing a task and needed fresh air. I would monitor the gauges, and switch over from bottle to bottle safely so that there was never an interruption in the air being used. I also performed fire watch for jobs that were considered HOT WORK, which is when welders would have to weld, or craftsmen would use power tools that created a spark or ignition source. Another task was hole watch, which I performed whenever personnel of any sort had to enter a confined space. All of these jobs I may have to perform at different times within one day. The management for this department was very helpful in every aspect of the job and personal needs. My co-workers were also good people and enjoyed them as well, when I could. The hardest part of this job is being able to make the right decision in a split moment and have know question about doing so. The most enjoyable part of the job is being able to work for many hours.
