Patient Access Specialist ED, Galax, VA - June 9, 2015
A typical day at work is coming in and not stopping from the time you come in till quitting time. Rescue Squads continuously, along with people just walking into the ER to be seen and people being brought in by the police deptartment. We are responsible to find out quickly what is going on call it back to the nurses in the ED and get them back to be seen. We then have to input and/or check their demographic information, insurance, etc and collect any money due according to their insurance policy. All of this while answering a multi-line switchboard, calling codes as they occur, calling the on call OR and ENDO crew in when needed as well as the on call physicians. We not only register the ER patients but any for labs and xray too on the weekends and after about 3:30pm in the afternoon in addition to direct admits to the hospital or OB checks. Co-workers are great to work with and management is good to work with you when you go to them with a need or request. The hardest part of the job is the stress and the most enjoyable part of the job is helping people to get better.
