These are W2 Part-Time Non-Exempt positions.

Contra Costa County residents only please. We have had too many instructors abandon their students when gas prices change because they decide the commute from Alameda or SF isn't worth it.

As implied above, WE WILL NOT RELOCATE YOU.

If you currently reside in India, please *STOP APPLYING*.

Staff Instructors have regularly scheduled classes and are eligible for benefits.

On Call positions are substitute instructors we will contact if short or long term opportunities arise during the hours of their scheduling availability.

About us:
Type A Yoga a small town small business. Think "Start-Up". We are dedicated to helping people who find yoga intimidating experience the changes yoga can create first hand. Alternative is our middle name-- we are here to provide an option for people who feel like outsiders in high priced, "in crowd," image-conscious studios, hardcore "feel the burn" gyms, or 50-person McYoga classes. We care about our community, our neighborhood, and regular people who want pain relief and help with their stress. We don't care about brand names or the latest fashionable yoga style. We care about our students and improving the lives of people we see everyday at the grocery store, post office, or in the car next to you at the stop light. We like to challenge the prevailing image of a yoga practitioner and we believe that the yoga community benefits from scientific inquiry and critical thinking.

For Staff Instructors:
About you:
You care about people and want to teach yoga. You don't just want to punch in, churn out yoga students like products, and then go off to teach your next class filled with nameless, faceless bodies in SF, Dublin, or Oakland. You actually want to play a part in creating yoga here in the suburbs where you live. You email your students when they miss class because you genuinely care about how they are feeling. You remember how hard it was to try yoga in the beginning and help your students to understand the process of learning a serious, lifelong practice out of a sincere care for the people around you. You want to not only teach yoga, but help people create change in their lives and build relationships. You have had a career and continue to take habits of professionalism, determination and reliability into your teaching practice. You want to join a team of like-minded yoga professionals and learn some new skills to take into the future. You value hard work and professionalism over self-promotion and short-term financial gain.

Staff Instructors:
Essential job duties include:

  • Teach regularly scheduled yoga classes in a safe and professional manner in accordance with studio policies.
  • Regularly check company email account and keep up with internal studio business.
  • Keep in touch with assigned clients via email when appropriate to aid them in maintaining a consistent practice.
  • Observe the Yoga Alliance Code of Conduct.
  • Answer customer questions.
  • Maintain YA registration and general liability insurance.
  • Ensure student satisfaction and comfort during their class.
  • Communicate with management and other team members regarding student or service concerns.
  • Punctual and consistent attendance and performance of job duties.
  • Maintain proper start/stop times for classes.

Additional duties may include:

  • Assist with studio upkeep including light cleaning, dusting
  • Check in clients and perform other front desk clerk duties, including answering phones and customer purchasing questions.
  • Teach off-site, corporate, and private classes when requested.
  • Attend and/or teach at promotional events including health fairs, conferences, etc.
  • Assist with promotion, sales, or marketing materials.

Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of RYT200 program and ACTIVE REGISTRATION!!! (We will run your name through the directory!)

Any style of yoga teacher training is acceptable, but please be well-rounded and have some experience in Iyengar alignment principles and props. We do NOT teach Bikram, hot yoga, power yoga, etc. (Nothing against them, but these styles don't generally balance the Type A personality but rather potentially exacerbate it.)

Be available multiple weekday evenings and some days. (If you have a full-time job elsewhere, you will not have sufficient availability. We are not looking for someone who just wants one or two weekend classes.)

Preferred Qualifications:
1-2 years teaching experience, especially with specialty populations like Gentle, Senior, Prenatal, etc.

Benefits:
Frankly, our pay isn't great. Again, think "start-up": We offer a relatively low rate for teaching based on experience, as well as a rate for additional job duties. We have incentive pay based on revenue-sharing, attendance commission pay, and per-class additional compensation for extra tasks like private lessons or corporate classes. We are still a young business, so we're looking for people willing to make short term financial sacrifices for a long term gain in community, purposeful work, and expanded knowledge and opportunity.

We believe in our homegrown community, though, and try to operate as a team. If you value knowledge and experience, this is the place for you! We have an ample library ranging from beginning yoga to advanced academic study and believe in cross-training in any and all fields of interest. We also share our teacher training and conference experience with each other in order to make ALL of us better teachers. We are all team members, not independent contractors that occasionally orbit each other, and we work hard to avoid the competition and division that can come from working in contractor environments. We want to maintain a supportive studio culture that benefits our entire community.

Following an introductory period, we may also offer access to group medical benefits for staff instructors working 20 hours (teaching and other duties combined).

For On-Call instructors:
Essential job duties include:

  • Teach infrequent, on-call yoga classes on a substitute basis in a safe and professional manner in accordance with studio policies.
  • Observe the Yoga Alliance Code of Conduct.
  • Answer customer questions to the best of your ability.
