Unloader (Current Employee), Richmond, VASeptember 20, 2014
Pros: keeps me in shape
Cons: inconsistent work schedule, sometimes sent home due to lack of work.
A typical day at work consists of unloading packages from a freight truck onto the facility conveyor belt in a given period of time. I am learning how to take direction from a supervisor on a consistent basis, I learned how to lift packages safely and how the facility operates daily. My position is a closely supervised position, I consistently receive – more... feed-back from my supervisor. The hardest part of my job is lifting packages weighing more than half my weight without help. The most enjoyable part of the job is feeling a sense of accomplishment when I finish unloading a truck. – less

Preloader - Package Handler (Former Employee), Duluth, MNSeptember 19, 2014
Pros: communication with coworkers, job was a workout.
Cons: short break, sometimes quite fast paced.
A typical day at work consisted of getting up early, getting to work, clocking in, saying hello to the guys, and waiting to hear the pre-shift announcement. This usually included needed improvements or praising employees for their efforts the day prior. We would then get sent to our work areas and begin loading our trucks with the packages that came – more... down the conveyor. The hardest part would have to be when you would have to deal with a "special," which was a large amount of packages going to the same location at the same time. Each day was usually pretty hectic but we were still able to communicate with our fellow employees and supervisors which was nice. Before long, the job was over and you were sent home. – less

Ups
Pre-loader and driver helper (Former Employee), Mount Pleasant, MISeptember 18, 2014
Pros: good pay and good work enviroment.
I worked a lot of hours which was a plus. I learned working at UPS is tough work mentally and physically. Management was very helpful in keeping me busy maybe lacked communication with others but other than that they were good. My co-workers were pleasant but we didn't talk much due to the fact of how busy we were. The hardest part of my job was keeping – more... up with the belt and making sure I got the packages in the right trucks. During peak season it can get a little overwhelming but you got to go in there with a sense that you can work under pressure. Most enjoyable was the weekends off and knowing every Friday that when I got out of work I really earned my paycheck. – less

Challenging, fast-paced logistics company
International Supervisor (Current Employee), Denver, COSeptember 17, 2014
Pros: schedule was conducive to staying in school, no work on weekends, competitive pay and benefits
Cons: high stress and long hours during the holidays made finals difficult
From training new employees, managing teams of 10-20+ union employees in varying job functions to data entry and analysis in high pressure, time-sensitive situations, working for UPS was one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs I have had.

Working amongst fellow college student, there was a definite sense of teamwork. Not only did everyone work – more... together to provide the best service to the customer, the camaraderie extended to volunteer and charity events as well as social gatherings.

A promotion at nineteen meant managing union employees of my parents' generation. Garnering such respect was an on-going challenge, but one that I overcame. I was never the supervisor of the same team for more than a year, constantly being reassigned to "most-help-needed" areas whether for production, safety or attendance issues. It was important to encourage team-building amongst employees, especially as many were new to the work force.

Eight years of developing strong communication skills, time management, cultivating professional relationships and coping with the chaos that is the holiday season while working towards my associates' degree has prepared me to face new challenges. – less

loader (Former Employee), ontario, caSeptember 16, 2014
Pros: exercise
Cons: no breaks and horrible management
For the first couple of weeks on my belt was fun until i was put in a trailer by my self with out enough training on the rollers in staid i was trained on a belt that brought packages the rollers caused jams that became unsafe work zones for me i could not walk around packages that where pushed on the ground by the rollers. on the days that i got backed – more... up and jammed on was not my fault but they blamed me for them and every day i got yelled at to move faster or to clean up the mess on the ground that the rollers caused not me they blamed me for the jams that where out of my control having me come out of my trailer to unjam them and to go back in the trailer when i could barely walk through it because everything was pushed to the side. never work at ups – less

loader/driver (Current Employee), Athens, GASeptember 16, 2014
Pros: great benifits
Cons: the managment team could be better
A typical day at work starts at 8:45 having our morning meeting, at around 9am all drivers start leaving for their routes. I would drive to Loganville to do my deliveries which was about 140-180 stops. I would usually finish around 7:30pm. I learned a lot of different areas and businesses, I also learned how to manage my time better. Management team – more... was ok. My co-workers were great they help me learn more about the job and how to get through the day. The hardest part of the job was lifting some of the odd shaped items. The thing I really enjoyed about the job was the customers they made my day. – less

I learned to always keep your eyes forward and to always lift with your legs. This job is extremely physical and can be dangerous if you are not careful.
