A typical day would include managing and arranging all discharges for medical and surgical patients on a given hospital service. The job also included being a team leader, arranging care conferences and other meetings for patients and their families on my services.
I learned how to establish helping relationships with patients and their family members, and how to facilitate meetings with other hospital staff to provide the best possible care for my patients.
My management experiences included handling all facets of planning and implementing discharges from the hospital for my patients, and being sure that all necessary disciplines were providing the best and complete care for each patient.
I maintained a friendly, but professional relationship with all hospital staff, including cooperation with my social work peers, who also covered my job for me when I was absent.
The hardest part of the job was completing all necessary discharges on a given busy day, often after normal work hours.
The most enjoyable part of the job was establishing brief intervention and relationships with patients and families who were open to my contact and needed my services.
