Unique People Services is a New York City-based nonprofit 501 (c) (3) corporation founded in 1991. Our mission is to serve--holistically and without judgment--those who may have been denied compassionate and considerate treatment elsewhere due to their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, developmental level, health status or criminal or substance use history.
Unique People Services is dedicated to providing a home and supportive services to persons with special and challenging needs--men, women and children we consider to be members of our family. Our staff strives to make these homes the warmest, safest and most welcoming environments in which to live.
We've grown rapidly since 1991 and now operate 13 supportive housing programs in the Bronx, Queens and Manhattan. Each year upwards of 500 persons stay with us in one of our programs. They receive meals and other nurturing that includes case management services focusing on helping the family member achieve the highest possible level of independent living.
Our client family is comprised of men, women and children suffering from HIV/AIDS, mental illness, homelessness and developmental disabilities. They are predominately insolvent or have very low incomes. Of the approximately 500 persons we serve each year, the overwhelming majority are members of minority groups, including African Americans, Latinos and Latinas, lesbians, transgender individuals, bisexuals and gay men. Relative to the general population, our clients are more likely to have a learning disability and are also much more likely to have been incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized at some point in their lives.
We strive to treat each of our family members as individuals with distinct personalities and to give them as much respect, kindness and compassion as is possible. We are also committed to maintaining their confidentiality. – less–ZoomInfo
