Negative, sometimes hostile work environment
Mid-Level Practitioner inpatient (Former Employee), Omaha – April 6, 2013
Pros: pay, benefits, learning growth
Cons: short staff, negative environment
Probably the most negative, and sometimes hostile work environment I have ever experienced. Management is very hands off and non responsive to concerns or complaints. Due to high census and lack of staff , often felt patient safety was an issue. It's really a shame because it could be a great place with better structure, organization, and managemen.

fun place to work with having same friendly customers.
Cashier (Former Employee), Omaha, NE – January 5, 2013
Pros: long breaks, friendly people
Cons: working double because people would call in.
Worked cashier and stocked sodas and chips and also snacks. I learned how to use cashier and count money fast due to lunch and dinner hours. Hardest part was restocking all sodas from the basement. I really enjoyed the pay and the hours i got in a week(sometimes overtime) and the friendly regular customers.

A friendly working environment with a very positive driving force
Post Doctoral Research Scientist (Former Employee), nebraska – November 16, 2012
Specific Duties:
• Assisting in the design and implementation of research
• Carrying out analysis of experimental data
• Developing and maintaining accurate records of results (ensuring data security and backup)
• Preparation of results for publication in scientific journals
• Assisting in the preparation of conference presentations or research findings
 – more... Participation in meeting and discussions as required
• Advising and collaborating with undergraduate project students, Masters and PhD students within the context of the research programme.
• Assisting with the day to day running of a research laboratory (maintaining a safe and tidy working environment and ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety requirements).
• To carry out additional duties related to research at the chemistry biological interface as may from time to time be required.

What I liked about the job was the fact that there was a lot of collaboration between different research groups. All the researchers were willing to help and share there research and equipments. The environment was very friendly, which definitely made the work enjoyable. The hardest and the best part of the job was that we had to present research papers (from other groups) every week, and criticize/suggest what could have added to the research. I learnt a great deal and it further broadened my knowledge. – less

Learning experience in operations and construction of health facilities.
Construction Project Manager (Former Employee), Omaha, Ne – October 31, 2012
Pros: ambitous and developing and learning experience
Cons: poor upper management skills and seeing some waste of tax payer dollars.
It is always an experience to learn new something everyday. Working in a health and education environment gave me a different outlook how critical it is to have the right equipment for the way research and hospitals operate.

A great place to work that fosters a team atmosphere with a tremendous enthusiasm for science.
Graduate Student (Former Employee), Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology – August 14, 2012
Pros: lots of current scientific seminars which allow for staying current in the field!
Cons: the level of enthusiasm at unmc is high making it a tall order for some employees to keep up!
A typical work day consists of running scientific experiments in a laboratory research setting with numerous interactions amongst peers and superiors. University of Nebraska Medical Center is a great place to work since there is strong emphasis on teaching entry level employees the necessary skills to succeed in their field. The management is terrific – more... at UNMC as they offer frequent feedback on employee progress and have a genuine desire to see their employees succeed on multiple levels of their lives. Co-worker camaraderie at UNMC is top notch and further contributes to the excellent work environment and to the overall success of the institution. The most difficult part of work at UNMC is divorcing oneself from so many creative and exciting projects in order to spend time doing other activities! While the most enjoyable part of the job is day to day interactions that occur amongst so many spirited and enthusiastic professionals. – less

A productive and fun place to work with resting rooms for employess
Medical Assistant/ OB/GYN (Former Employee), Omaha, NE – July 13, 2012
Pros: free catered lunches, company parties
Cons: parking
This was a work place where you had to stay on your toes, because there were Dr. and resident Drs working at the same time seeing patients for different things. We were all assigned to one dr. some times two. Calling patients from the waiting area and getting them prep for paps, physicals, or routine pregnancy visits was a typical day here. This is – more... where I learned to draw blood outside of school training.Management was great. My coworkers were helpful and friendly. The only thing that was hard about this job was keeping up, with when the General Surgeon was coming in. But the most enjoyable was working with the first time mothers/parents. – less

A stmulating place for enthusiastic post docs!
Post- Doctoral Fellowship (Current Employee), Omaha, NE – June 6, 2012
Pros: degree of independance with research, amicable work ambiance
Cons: benefits, accessibility (with respect to location in us)
UNMC, according to me is the perfect place for a fresh post doc with lot of energy and enthusiasm. The work environ is pleasant, with peers who are admired and awe inspiring.

My typical day at work starts at 8am in the morning stretching unto late hours of night. As a post doc in stem cell biology lab, my focus of work was to explore the underlying – more... molecular mechanisms of adult retinal stem cell activation and their possible plasticity potential to tweak them towards photoreceptor lineage. My research
work encompasses lots of mammalian tissue culture (stem cells), molecular biology, immunological techniques, in vivo animal experiments and various histological techniques.

Being a post doc, it was always a race against time. That said, I have to balance and organize lot of things, against tight dead lines. In other words, life at UNMC did help me hone my time management skills. Apart from regular research work, I was also
actively handling various administrative responsibilities, viz., IRB approvals, IACUC (animal handling) protocols, maintenance of animal colonies, purchase orders and stocking of reagents etc.

I have been quite fortunate to have helping and understanding colleagues, who have been an indispensable source of team spirit and moral support during testing times. We work towards maintaining a harmonious relationship with mutual respect.

The hardest part of my job is to multi task various aspects of research and administrative responsibilities in day to day activities. However,my exposure to work atmosphere, since my doctoral graduate days have taught me nuances of how to handle
such situations under stress, without losing focus and at the same time, achieving excellence.

The easiest part of my job is my ability to interact with people, which forms a part and parcel of my job. Being a researcher, I have to communicate with people from different work backgrounds and diverse cultures. This interaction does translate into team work and also helps me better understand and learn from my counter parts with regards to their perspectives towards work ethics and various aspects of personality development, which helped me shape myself into a better human being, on a personal and professional front. – less

average at best
Security Officer (Former Employee), Omaha, NE – May 8, 2012
Pros: a few good people in the department; money is ok.
Cons: lack of breaks; on feet or walking, etc., for hours on end. politics. some bad leadership.
There was WAY too much to learn in too short of time. The security department is full of negative people who seem to be staying only for the money (a lot of complaining, etc.) Moral is low. A lot of game playing & shift wars going on, especially by the overnight shift. Very minor mistakes are written up, resulting in nothing. Reports have to be written – more... even for the most minor of incidents (hand-written by the way) as the computer access is very limited. I would not work here again. – less

Not the best place for a postdoc
Postdoctoral research associate (Current Employee), Omaha, NE – December 31, 2012
Pros: getting postdoc experience
Cons: low salary, long hours, unsatisfied pi
The University has a postdoc association, but its of absolutely no use. PI's treat postdocs, especially foreigners, in the way they want to treat. Hardly any salary structure exists. University only recommends, but its totally PI's viewpoint that "how less they can pay to a postdoc". There are no working hours and no holidays. Life is very hard as winters – more... are too harsh here. – less
