UWIC recruits a great deal of sporting talent every year and the Student and Athletic Unions aim to provide a quality service for our sports people. We fund the provision of coaching and provide the excellent sports facilities that you will find on the Cyncoed site. Here we have an outdoor athletics track, international tennis centre, astro-turf multi-purpose pitch and state-of-the-art gymnasia. At the Llandaff site a gymnasium is situated in the amenities block. We aim to support individuals and teams who have to travel long distances for competitions and fund all those in representative teams.
Whilst we expect all of our students studying sport to represent the university, we do recognise success. Every year the Union organise the Sports Personality of the Year Awards evening that is one of the highlights of the sporting calendar. The success of the 2007/2008 sporting year was celebrated at the Mercure Holland House Hotel, Newport Road, Cardiff, a fitting location to recognise the achievements of both UWIC teams and individuals. There are awards for excellence not just in performance but also administration and voluntary work, and are voted for by staff and students. All international performers that season are individually rewarded, but the ultimate prize is to become the Sports Personality of the Year, which carries tremendous prestige within the university. This year's winner was Stephanie Collins, Masters student and International Basketball player who was a member of the UWIC Archers Basketball Team that won the BUSA Final in Sheffield 2008.
UWIC has become a powerhouse in university sport, and we can this year boast being British University Champions in Women's Football, Women's Basketball, Women's Rugby Union, Trampolining, Boxing, Rowing, Rugby 7-aside as well as being the 1st British University to hold a European title by winning the European University Men's Rugby 7's title. No small feat, considering the size of the Institution compared to Loughborough, Bath and Birmingham, Oxford and Edinburgh who finished above us. – less–ZoomInfo
