Working for Upward Bound is amazing!
Teaching Residential Advisor (Former Employee) –  Johnson, VTOctober 20, 2017
Working for Upward Bound was so much fun! It's a 6 week program (plus a week of training before the program) where you help a group of high school students work towards that dream of going to college. You get to share your college career with them, help them work through applications and teach them important life and college skills like time management and note taking.
The staff become really close, almost like a family. Wake up at 5am to do your personal routine, 7 bring the students over to breakfast, then the day is full of activities, classes, study times, etc., then final reports and go to bed by 1 or 2am. This goes from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon.
Free dorm for the summer, free food on weekdays, great pay.
Pros
Free housing, free food on weekdays, great pay, awesome people.
Cons
Almost 100 hours per week

Students are great, coworkers are not.
Academic Residential Advisor (Former Employee) –  Olympia, WAOctober 5, 2017
The students were all generally decent to the Academic Residential Advisers, but not all of the staff were accepting. Several staff were not prepared for their positions and let interpersonal issues affect the work place.
Pros
Free food, semi-laid back break times.
Cons
Bad pay, bad coworkers.

Program Manager II (Former Employee) –  Atlanta, GASeptember 28, 2017
It's a non-profit, so the money is not outstanding. However, if you enjoy working with students, this is a great fit! It gives you great experience with management, programming, managing grant funds and community engagement.

U.B. is a fun, yet exhausting place to work. However, few jobs are more rewarding.
Tutor/Counselor, and School year tutor (Current Employee) –  Sault Sainte Marie, MIAugust 15, 2017
The Upward Bound program is a wonderful college program that provides real, effective college preparation to low income and first generation students that would otherwise find college out of reach. The program does not simply put students through rigorous tests, but also teaches them skills that will help them get hired for the jobs they want and will reach out to local high schools to insure that they are having their needs met, and that the schools are taking appropriate steps to ensure that member students are receiving the counseling and education they need to both enter, and succeed in college. Overall, it was the most rewarding job I ever had.
Pros
Rewarding, good job networking, learning to teach, service to the community.
Cons
Low pay, high requirements, no benefits for hourly employees, highly exaustive.

A Good Summer Opportunity to Make a Difference
Summer Institute Instructor (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILAugust 7, 2017
This is a good opportunity for those who are looking to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged students. However, it does seem that the program is still developing and the students are not well disciplined. That said, considering the students' troubled backgrounds, this was not surprising.
