Urbana was founded in 1805 in Champaign County, Ohio and is known as the Heart of Champaign County. Urbana has an outstanding downtown business district, with much character and charm of the early 1800's. Our community takes pride in the restoration and preservation of the older buildings. We are fortunate to have local interest in this preservation. Our Municipal Building is located at 205 South Main Street, just one block south of our unique Historic District which boasts diverse stores that offer antiques, furniture, coffees and teas, an old-fashioned candy store, fine dining, delicatessens, auto services, interior design, real estate offices, gifts, a local theatre, a grocery, and several banking institutions. Local churches lace around the downtown Historic District. Our historic railroad depot has been restored with new restrooms for public use along the Simon Kenton Trail. The Urbana Airport houses the Grimes Flying Lab Museum and the Champaign Aviation Museum featuring the B-17 Reconstruction Project.
Many of our businesses have been established for over forty years. We are a remarkable community that knows where its heart is, right in downtown Urbana, Ohio. I believe that our local people have made the difference in our successes of bringing visitors to Urbana, using their talents and skills and working as a team to stimulate interest in our community. This involvement is proof that Urbana is the best place to live, work, and visit.
The City of Urbana is focused on drawing new manufacturing and commercial businesses to our community. We are willing to offer a good economic development package and partnership with new companies for the betterment of our community. We believe in our community and are focused on bringing in new development and redevelopment for the future of Urbana.
The City of Urbana is busy working in the neighborhoods, improving the infrastructure. We have improved our water source for the future by installing new wells. A new water plant is scheduled to finish construction in 2009. We continue to make improvements to our waste water treatment facility and processes to make us more efficient and effective. We are involved in improving the sidewalks, curbs and sewer lines. We are looking forward to enhancing our business district on the east end of town in 2009. The City, along with local residents, are working on a comprehensive plan for future growth. This plan will be our roadmap for potential new development.
I commend our city departments as team leaders, providing good service to our citizens, and working to keep Urbana beautiful.
