Initially, when I started as an ER PA with VEP, I worked in the old Mercy Merced Hospital. The way this old Hopeital was set-up enabled the PA to work both in the front, in fast Track, as well as in back, working-up that patient with a higher acquity. This was a great balance. It was interesting and challenging. The PA's were also supported by the Md's in bringing to them any question or cases we needed them to hear about, and intervene on, if necessary.
A brand new Mercy Hospital opened. Fortunately the new ER had room for 2 PA's to see patients at the same time, however, it did not allow the PA's to easliy work in back. It was at this time I considered moving into the Hospitalist side of VEP to work with the patient with a higher acquity.
