Excellent Employer for A LIFETIME CAREER
HEALTHCARE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR (Former Employee), San Juan, PR –
Pros: opportunities for advancement if you are mobile, great benefits
Cons: must enjoy working with people otherwise, you will not be successful
I started working for the VA about a year after separation from military service. I started part time as a GS-4 and achieved promotions within the Department to a GS-15. I retired two years ago and do not regret one day of working with the VA. I was able to move with my job and worked at facilities in New York, Puerto Rico, Texas, Kentucky, California – more...  and New Mexico. I returned to Puerto Rico where I worked a straight 15 years before retirement. Puerto Rico is a great place to work. If you love your job and are committed to the mission of caring for this nations veterans, you will love working here. – less

Horrible bureaucracy
Program Manager (Current Employee), Salt Lake City, UT –
Horrible bureaucracy; no leadership; absurd policies. There are so many handbooks and regulations that they cannot/are not read and workers "make it up" as they go.

RLR VA Indianapolis Poor Management
Medical Technologist (Former Employee), Indianapolis, IN –
Pros: fairly good benefits
Cons: extra work and shifts for comp time, no overtime paid
A typical workday was terribly inefficient due to the antiquated computer system and managements insistance on additional manual tasks because the computers cannot track workload. Suggestions to management within the system are ingnored unless they can be created and put into place without any additional efforts of management. There is a complete lack – more...  of tools and systems in place to perform at supperior levels and the personnel there have all come from home grown systems. Outsiders and ideas that are not from the present people or system are not wanted and should be kept to one self for preservation. – less

Continually challenging.
Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist (Current Employee), North Hills, CA –
Cons: restrictive culture.
The best part of my job is that I am certain I am helping people in need. This is perhaps the only reward that is measurable, somewhat. The hardest part of the job is that you get unpredictable outcomes primarily due to clinical issues.

Some friendly staff, great place to work.
Volunteer (Current Employee), Martinez, CA –
Pros: great place to learn and improve skills.
Cons: insecure and some unprofessional employees.
Although the majority of the staff are friendly, people are insecure that you're trying to take their job. If staff is not sure of your position, some can become very territorial, annouce their years of employment or be stand offish. More training is needed on how staff talk to each other, also to the volunteers and improvement needed for some when – more...  it comes to professionalism. The veterans and their families are treated well. – less
