Welder, Troutville va metal fab - September 17, 2016
Worked for va transformer a year as a welder. Hard dirty work that pays well but your being payed to pretty much neglect your family as a welder since if you work there you must work second shift and long hours with pretty much no chance to make it to first within ten years. Lots of fluxcore stick and hardwire welding and the smoke that comes with it. Smoke inhalation is a problem as well as hex chrome inhalation is a problem that is ignored as there is a pretty good amount of stainless stick and flux welding done without protection from respirators. Work is physically strenuous and dangerous some of the stuff I've seen done there baffles me especially as a tank welder there needs to be better procedures made for the use of overhead cranes. Things are dropped from tables and slammed around into things constantly and people get hurt regularly (and then HR treats you as a criminal for getting into an accident) Flipping a large tank is an butt clenching process that you never really get used to as their is no real safe way to rig them to do so...if you accept a job there you will see what I mean immediately. Management is pretty new at the moment brand new metal fab supervisor is doing all he can to help welders meet impossible expectations of upper management in Roanoke but even with production improving no positive reinforcement for it only more cracking of the whip from upper management. Production supervisor of second shift is a positive breath of fresh air as well who trys to work as best as he can with what he has but also only receives little support. As far as rest of management and company in general its just terrible. Overall from the welders prospective I can tell you this your going to get a lot of good experience with a lot of processes and fab work when they finally get around to training you (another serious issue) and you'll be payed fairly well for it but its definitely not a place to make a career. The only reason I would see a person having to take a job here is for the same reason I did I needed the experience and I had no other way to support my family. That being said if that is your situation get in get the experience and get as as quickly as you can before you start hateing wakeing up in the morning otherwise if you have any other choice avoid this place like the plague.
