Numerical Weather Prediction System Specialist

Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) is a growing Norman-based weather company focused on providing world-class severe/hazardous weather detection, nowcasting, and forecasting data and services to our global clients. We are seeking a Numerical Weather Prediction System Specialist to lead efforts to maintain and advance our suite of NWP systems and related technologies. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a team of passionate meteorologists and software engineers who take serious the responsibility of providing mission critical services and systems to weather-sensitive industries, international governments, media outlets, and consumers.

- Assists with maintaining and improving WDT’s existing NWP systems operating in multiple data centers domestically and internationally, including responding to operational issues

- Serves in a development-to-operations capacity, working with IT staff and NWP scientists in specifying, acquiring, deploying, and testing High Performance Computing solutions specifically for NWP

- Ensures NWP systems meet meteorological quality and system performance criteria of operational clients

The successful candidate is someone who is passionate about the use of computer science and technology to enhance operational meteorology and has the following attributes:

- MS in Computer Science or Meteorology or equivalent experience

- Significant experience in compiling and running parallel codes using distributed memory parallelism (OpenMPI, MPICH, etc.) on Linux/UNIX high performance computing (HPC) systems

- Basic understanding of HPC hardware, including high-performance interconnects (e.g. InfiniBand), shared storage, multi-core servers, and how these items affect MPI program performance

- Experience with cluster job management tools such as GridEngine

- Experience working with the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model or similar system, including compilation, execution, and evaluation of results

- Proficient in creating reliable, efficient, maintainable scripts and programs for complex process management. Preferred languages are Python, Perl, and Fortran

- Proficient working within a Linux development environment with common open source tools.

- Must be a “self-starter” with attention to detail and a desire to innovate within a dynamic, rapidly changing environment

- Strong organizational skills and able to use critical thinking to identify objectives and priorities in a multi-tasking environment

- High quality professional communication in written, verbal and presentation forms with leadership, team members and clients

- Willing and able to travel internationally

Possessing any of the following attributes is a plus:

- Experience with the ROCKS cluster tools

- Experience working with gridded NWP output, including post-processing software and algorithm development
- Knowledgeable or experienced in data assimilation and/or model physics

- Experience work with other atmospheric and/or oceanographic modeling systems
